Did anyone else feel that familar wave of meh hit them after playing fallout 3 for a while?

It's the same feeling stalker gives me whenever i try to get into it, the same feeling oblivion gives me just thinking about it.

I got about 7 hours in on the main story, but all excitement has just vanished. The enemies all react the same, the story is predictable. The sidequests seem pointless. I just really feel no reason to play.. It's not a bad game, in fact i struggle to pick out exactly what it is which bores me. Epic games like half life 2 have you on the edge of your seat the whole way through, long drawn out games like ff7 have that constant "need" to progress the story, mmo's such as wow have the constant reward. Fallout 3 seems to have everything there, it just lacks that little piece of magic - that little "spark".

Yup, tis just Oblivion with guns imo (/dons a flameproof suit).

See, that would be fine if it wasn't fallout, Oblivion was a good game in its own right, just not my sort of game. But fallout is one of the best RPGs of all time, to have it converted into something i already knew i didn't like was rather heartbreaking to watch. To add to the change in gameplay/NPC interaction, the dark sense of humour is all but gone which is really what made fallout so special.

If it was actual Oblivion with guns it'd be pretty cool. Daedra annoying you? Pop out the soulbound assault rifle with a 5 hp/sec damage aura.

I think the problem comes from lack of linearity.

When given too much in the way of choice/options, people tend to just do nothing and get bored.

People moan about linear games, but 99% of them are linear, including the most successful ones. At a push there could be maybe a handful of different paths to take, but they are still linear to that particular storyline.

Sandbox removes all that, and I've noticed that I certainly tend to prefer fewer open-endedness to my games.

Exactly true. You need a strong direction to the storyline...and anything 'sandbox' like needs to be something that you can feel is optional rather than feeling that the storyline is optional.

BG achieved that pretty well, you could go off the beaten path, but still cross over the main storyline as you do so.

Oblivion/FO3 you can completely ignore the main storyline if you wish.

My exact feelings when I played it the weekend it had come out.

At first it seemed good and promising, not long into it I started thinking "there is nothing new, it's feeling samey".

So I played it for about 8-10 hours doing as many side missions and trying to enjoy the content.

After the 10 hours I just gave up, an RPG trying to be FPS just didn't pull it off. Nothing new or exciting about the game. VATS was incredibly boring. I didn't like treking for miles with nothing to kill or do.

That's like me with every single player game, I just can't be bothered at all.

Felt the same with Oblivion and Mass Effect for some reason, RPGs have really lost it for me nothings come close to the time I spent playing Final Fantasy 10 for me in the RPG department.
I think COD4 has ruined any game that isn't all action for me it was short, fast paced and brilliant.

Tbh i think fallout lacked a lot, i know ill get flamed for this but i dont think it deserved 10/10, 100% etc

i got quite far threw and i just cant carry it on no more, and im a massive RPG fan.

I doubt you'll get flamed tbh. The game certainly wasn't deserving of the 10/10 scores etc, but then, that seems to be the case with most well reviewed games these days.

Spore, Farcry 2 and the big-fat-elephant in the room known as GTAIV also didn't deserve the gushing reviews they received. It seems marketing and developer status buys good reviews these days.

My feelings exactly and I love Oblivion.

I didn't get the 'meh' feeling, I loved FO3, Oblivion and Stalker, exploring a game world without being directed through it too much is great fun. I think I just like sandbox/open style games :)

VERY same thing happened to me with this game, i think i played it for about 10 or so hours, quite near the end i think i am..

But played it about 3 months ago and havnt touched it since...

Theres just nothing drawing me back to it i dont think, its like i cant be bothered to play it. the DLC looks cool tho but it will still the same same old.

the meeeeeeeeeeh wave hit me hard

Glad to hear i wasn't the only one that felt it :)

I remember being like *WOWWOWWOOWOO* at the start, there seemed like so much to do.. The world is your oyster.

However by about 7 hours in you've explored most of it, enough to realise there are only a handful of intresting places the rest are just copy/paste generic crap which serve little point other than filler. I think the game could have benifitted from being smaller, more action packed and a more focused story - it would have made it a tighter experience..... Not linear per say, but perhaps less open then it is currently.

I liked it a lot though I preferred Stalker since it is darker, a little more atmospheric imo. Also, I found Fallout a little more predictable where as Stalker used to make me jump sometimes.:D Still, Fallout is one of the best fps/rpg's I've played and probably will grab the DLC later.

dunno what meh means but i played it for a hour and thought it was rubbish, same with bioshock and owt else like that

just can never get into them

I'm finding that the case with gaming now, from sports games to fps.

Personally, every genre has been done to death with this hardware and each year nothing is changing due to the restrictions.

If only I can get this bloody time machine working.

I don't really get the 'meh' feeling, I've played Fallout 3 for 34 hours now and am still finding new and fun things to do.
