new internet tax

Digital capital of the world? So we're going to exceed S. Korea's 100mb service that is the average over there are we? We'll become that good eh?

'No family or business misses out' ...damn right, we can't have the people of britain missing out on paying yet another tax  'cause that's not what this government is about...

As mentioned, why don't they scrap ID cards as no one wants them anyway? Better yet, help fund the next generation BB service with all the money mp's will have to pay back in fiddled expenses.

BT have had the monopoly let them pay for it. They have dragged us behind all the other countries and supplied a sub standard level, they should be made to pay.

Dragged us behind all the other countries? That's a bit of a stretch, sure we're not a leader in broadband speeds but we'd come out better than some other countries like Germany, Canada, USA when it comes to speed vs cost.

But anyway as I said in the other thread, this is just Brown giving the Scottish another little bit extra from the pot. ;)

This tax is discriminating on those who already are on broadband. I thought our phone lines network is owned by BT who has been privatised ?

we pay line rental, which has VAT added, the telco pays tax to the govt... why should the customer be taxed twice?

Labour really know how to win over one of their core Youtube based demographics.

I would be happy to donate to a scheme to provide better services in my area if I was going to benefit, I don't like the thought of being forced into paying though

While I think the money could have been found a different way, it's clear that if the UK is to upgrade to a national fibre optic network then government funding will be a requirement.

If left purely to BT / Virgin Media then you'd never have fast broadband access outside of large towns as it wouldn't make financial sense.

Plus BT did try to get a high speed network going in the 80's (I think) but Thatcher rejected it. They couldn't do it alone and now we're lacking behind.

The current network is ok if you can receive ADSL2 services (or higher) but I'm stuck on 2mb here and it's crippling. I think the minimum speed in the report should have been much higher.

heads would roll if they tried to do that here

well there'd be people in the streets at least ;)

Last french people I knew at my college thought we were all weird for not rioting :P

I agree with you though, the people need to more action. If they implement it thousands need to march on the offices.

I think it's fine in principle. Somethings need be state financed.

But in reality it'll be wasted, manipulated and a total waste of time and money.

I think it is a good idea. Just like road tax. Invest in the infrastructure - we all benefit in the long run.
But that's the problem it's vehicle tax and does not go towards infrastructure. it's just a general tax that goes in the pot.

I know many people (and some very old) who don’t have broadband, why are they going to be taxed for their phone line?

Another Gordo scheme to milk the people.

Any investment in the so called “broadband future” should be paid for by the government but wait they can't afford it. It is just another ploy to deflect people away from the current problems.

So if i dont have motorway access near me can the government add some tax so anyone that lives in rural areas such as the high lands can have fast driver access.
This is all bull its a tax to raise extra money.
