Hoping to get some advice.

Ive been a PC gamer for as long i can remember, but over the years..with family/kids taking over, i never get a chance to play on the PC anymore.
so im finally looking to get a console!! with the hope i can quickly turn it on in the living room and have a quick blast.
not sure what to go for, xbox360 or ps3.
i know its a bit general, but im not sure what to go for.. as i dont have a clue.
games wise on the PC i play sports games/ first person shoot em ups/ RTS.
im not expecting to replace the RTS/FPS style of games, becuase i know nothing replaces the PC for this style of game.
but none the less, i need a console.
so which one?

Liking my 360, it's got most of the games I want to play in couch potato mode.

Forza2, Grid, Mass Effect, Fallout3, Lost Odyssey, GTAIV, Star Ocean IV, to name but a few.

Some good ones coming as well, Mass Effect 2, Forza 3, Final Fantasy 13.

Doubt whether it's as good a media hub as the PS3, but it's not bad, I can stream videos, music, even BBC iPlayer!

Best way is to always look at the top 100 games on metacritic and see which ones interest you most:

PS3

360

I usually tell people that have good PCs to seriously consider the PS3 as many of the 360s exclusives eventually make it to the PC. However, this is entirely dependant on how much access you get to your PC these days, if it's barely at all then the 360 is still a very viable option.

Well to start off, it depends on what you want to spend, the PS3 is pretty much double the cost of the 360. Then you need to look at the exclusive titles on each console and which ones you like the look off. Also the PS3 offers blu-ray, so would you like this as a feature.

I'm still a massive PC gamer, but recently bought a PS3, mainly because of blu-ray and games that don't suit the PC (fifa, tiger woods, burnout etc). I've now found myself playing it slightly more now and loving the exclusive titles on the console, mainly infamous (fantastic game). So take a look at the games you'd like to play and what you want to spend on the console.

If you are completely phasing out PC gaming then I'd say get a 360, cheapest option with a huge catalogue of games.

If you are still going to be gaming on PC then I'd say get a PS3. Most of the 360 games are on PC anyway and you'd have a blu-ray player as well.

Just 3 things to say really, 2 of which have been said already

1. I've always felt the 360 pad was more FPS friendly than the Playstation.
2. Some of the 360 exclusives are also on PC
3. Check out the exclusives on each consoles, and see which wets your appetite more

I was a PC gamer who decided a few years ago to do exactly what you're suggesting. Around when my first daughter was born I sold my gaming rig, closed my Eve account and bought a 360 and an internet laptop and never looked back.

I'm a 360 gamer because it came out first and had the games I wanted on it (Oblivion/Fable 2/Mass Effect) but in all honesty both console have a great line up and you wouldn't go wrong with either. I'd suggest not getting a Wii though as despite having a few awesome games (Super Mario Galaxy & Boom Blox) after this it'll just gather dust.

Also ... I once said fps couldn't be any good on a console and I'm now a total convert. Go through COD2 on Veteran with a controller and you'll swear a lot but you'll be set for life. Go on, try it.

edit: Also don't forget about the checking out awesome selection of casual games available on each platform; Rez HD, Peggle, Pac Man CE, Geometry Wars 2, Castle Crashers, etc. on XBLA and Flower, Noby Noby Boy, Trash Panic, Pixel Junk *, Flow etc. on PSN.

I have both and find myself using the Xbox more, with the ps3 relegated to a blue ray player/media streamer and the odd exclusive.

If you've got a PC, then get a PS3. With a PS3 and PC you've got access to pretty much every game that comes out, barring the odd one like Fable 2 and Gears 2 etc.

Yup pretty much. You get things like The Last Guardian on the PS3 which you probably wouldnt even get a knock-off on the 360.

I'm in the same boat as you and I went for the PS3

The Bluray player is very handy, as is the option to make it a media centre PC (Play TV). I find the internet browser very useful and frequently watch iPlayer/You Tube etc on it. A lot of the use my PS3 gets is as a media centre PC, not just as a console. If you're into Second Life or similar check out PlayStation Home

Most of the 360 games come to the PC anyway and some of the PS3 exclusives are really rather good

You can't go wrong with either.

I agree. BUT here is my take on it.

If you don't have a PC able to play games, then get either.

If you don't have a good PC but like to play some PC type of games get a 360.

If you *DO* own a good PC and want a console, get a PS3.

*Insert the usual if you want the blu ray, and blah blah get a PS3, if you want live or whatever get a 360 here*

In a perfect world get both, in a non perfect world look at the games on both, test both out if possible (especially the pads).

I will say that I like both pads, but the 360 one is pretty bad for fighting games, but nicer for FPS games (depending on the game) most other games the controllers are equal.

I play games on a PS3, an XBOX 360 and a PC, just in case you are curious to my preference / what I own.

Oh yeah, and this is my opinion, no doubt some one will be screaming in fan boy rage (:p) that it is wrong, but seriously the best advice is look to see which you prefer the feel and games of.

I'd say start with the 360, as you can ease yourself in with some more familiar games, and then move onto the more 'true' exclusives, and there are tons of good cross platform games on top..

At this exact moment in time, the PS3 is still a tad 'expensive' (it's excellent VFM, just still expensive).. and cross platform titles on the whole can still be a little hit and miss (most are totally equivocal, but you still get the odd 'ghostbusters' incident!)..

You can then get a PS3 to go alongside it when they eventually get cheaper, and enjoy all the exclusives it has to offer..

But, I do think you could do with looking at the games you like, and looking at which platform is better for you from that perspective..

he wants a console as he cant get on the pc

Ah yes, sorry I mean its all down to whether or not the PC will still get used for FPS/RTS.

I have to say I agree on the RTS side, I tried C&C Red Alert for all of about 5 minutes before screaming for a mouse.

FPS is fine on a console. I've used both pads and it takes no time to get accustomed to twin stick action.
