We signed for a 3 bed house this morning and the house has 3 double bed rooms. One of the rooms is huge, another is big and the third is still a good size but only enough to fit a double bed, small desk and small wardrobe.
We need to decide who get what, one person im moving in with has 3 amps a guitar and a 42" plasma screen. So he is saying he need room for all his stuff

We want to make it fair but I think having a 42" plasma tv in your bedroom isnt something the average person has in their room. I have 2 big speakers and amp, computer as does the other person. I also have a 5 foot x 4 foot mirror that needs putting on the wall somewhere

In the past when i have been in houses we drew straws and i ended up with a prison sized room. What is a fair way of deciding who gets what?

the way we settled with was go to a snooker hall, and play a knockout torunament, first to 1 round.

then a 3/4th place play off

I won the second room :0

actually a fun and non-argument inducing way to do it, have 2 or 3 vodkas first to make it more equal

Straws, unless there is a good reason (such as room sharing) why someone has a greater need for the bigger room.

I agree with A1ex though, should have decided this before you signed.

Just be first in the door on the day you move in and run up to the biggest room.

No, when we had to decide we just drew names but a drinking game sounds more fun!

We had a very similar situation in our shared house. We priced the rooms up differently, largest room was £25pm more expensive thatn the second largest etc.

We picked names out of a hat. Simple and fair. Those who were dissapointed by room size were placated by the reduced cost.

/edit - To clarify, names out of the hat picked for choice.

Two options really - differential pricing or 'timeshare'. If the rent is £1000 a month price the rooms at £400, £350 and £250 for example. Just adjust the prices until everyone is happy. There will be a price configuration that everyone is happy with. Or have 4 months in one configuration, after 4 months everyone swaps rooms then for the last 4 months of the year everyone swaps again. That way everyone gets the same distribution.

Rather than standard straws, you should draw straws for choice.

Longest straw gets first choice.

Short straw gets last choice.

By far the best way of doing it.

Fairest way is to divvy up the rent differently, bigger rooms pay more, levels it out a bit. When I went to uni I got the smallest room because I was at home (watching 9/11) while they were having a look at the place.
