I just don't 'get' Halo...

I thought the C buttons worked very well in goldeneye.

Forward and backwards on the stick, C left and Right for movement.

Left and right on the stick, C Up and Down for looking.

Strange, but it did work well. Granted, it wasn't the most precise system in the world but a good carpenter never blames his tools.

Horses for courses tbh. Its just my opinion...

One thing is for certain, before Halo came out there was no standard for FPS controls on any of the consoles, that seems to have now been rectified and most console FPS games now use the halo controls as a template.

Stuff off, the console and laptop are the last 2 things to get packed :p

Yes but you'll be out celebrating.

Also I think now that we play as part of a party on XBL instead of "reminding you" about the quality time we have spent with your mum, pre and post games we should use the time to quickly outline the strategy for the level and then discuss how we could have improved after the game (other than Krono needs to stop dieing)

I played Halo for a bit and never really understood all the hype. I suppose it falls into the same category as WoW and the iPhone, just because its not the best around doesn't mean its not popular. Perhaps the fact that it seemed rather simple to play makes it more appealing to the masses, but I prefer something difficult.

Gotta admit im in the same boat. I just dont see the draw to Halo. I guess its popular as it was probably the first console game to properly implement solid working controls for the controller, making it accessible to people who had never played a FPS before. Part of it probably comes down to me being more of a PC gamer, having played loads of top end and low end FPS's and finding Halo somewhere in the middle :).

A lot of people keep trumpeting that it's not the best fps, but what is, there's not much in it these days tbh.

Bioshock is the best single player FPS nowadays in spades.

Too many sacrifice their SP mode for multiplayer.

There are a lot of good MP games now in a market where there were none.

I wonder if the upcoming spin off games will dilute the brand somewhat. Lessen the impact. Much like what has happened to some of the larger 3rd party exclusive franchises.

Half Life is my all time favourite FPS ever. Never really got into Halo at all so I would agree totally with the 'I don't get Halo' comment.

A couple of questions.

Would most of the gamers who dislike Halo, be more PC FPS gamers rather than console gamers?

What difficulty setting did the gamers that Dislike it, find that not much was happening or found it too easy play it on?

I think there is also an issue with weapon selection in some cases as each weapon has it uses eg if you used the plasma pistol incorrectly (rapidly firing it or shooting it at unshielded enemies) your going to be thinking "WTF?" but if you charged the gun up and fired it at a shielded elite and then followed that up with a pistol (or BR) shot to the head you'll find that works much better.

Also if you lay back and "snipe" everything I could imagine that being a bit boring the game is for the most part expected to be played within grenade range.

I never understand this, what do people find so enthralling about it, I almost murdered people for going on about "FPS 2.0" when it came out, but it seemed like nothing special to me, see enemies, shoot enemies.

1- Yes
2- Heroic/Legendary depending on number of players, but I barely play single player anyway
3- I hate camping

I not a huge fan because it's a really old format with its item/super weapon/pickups reliance, weird movement (particularly floaty air jumps), crap game types, lack of mid-game joining/quitter issues and long drawn out battles...

The list goes on but there are many draconian components that need re-working for it to survive.

Run like **** from big daddies (I didn't get that far into the game tbh, lent it out to my brother) I don't really have "time" to play sp FPS games anymore, I'd rather play MP. If there was a co-op mode for Bio-shock I would have totally played it through.

Funny thing about Bio-shock is that I accidentally lowered the gamma settings on the game before I played it. So when I played the first few levels it was really dark and quite "Atmospheric" and totally **** inducing as I could barely see the enemies, so progress was slow and the game was really challenging. Once I figured out my mistake (quite far into the game) the game became really easy and a bit boring.

Oh look. We haven't had one of these Halo Hate threads in absolutely ages. Is there a new Halo game coming out soon or something?

When we gonna get the "PS3 sucks Cell is slow Xbox rules" thread?

I like the floaty air jumps (or I did in Halo2) as they offer you the time to use your jump to take "shortcuts" across the map, the problem is Bungie have not made any effort to make use of the floaty jumps in Halo3 (there was much more use for them in halo2)

I'm not too fussed about mid-game joining/leaving I think the way it is currently prevents abuse of the leveling system and other irritating behavior. I'm not saying its perfect but I feel its the best option given the circumstances.

In terms of movement (and shield regeneration) I'd wish things were slightly faster

Gametypes are mostly good there are a few less fun ones (territories again I prefer the Halo 2 implementation) and sometimes they use the "Wrong maps" for certain game types. I also wish (something Kreeeee and Alrik have also mentioned in the past) that you could veto the game and map independently

I think that throughout the Halo series they have had a lot of good weapons (and iterations of weapons) sadly they are not all in the same game, As I have said in this thread and others I like the fact that each weapon more or less has a purpose and a use, and that their are super weapons. I dislike FPS games where you choose your weapon at the beginning of the game and thats all you have available.
However I now feel there are too many different weapons, and a few weapons that do too similar a thing in Halo3.
TBH I'd do away with most of the dual wield weapons (i.e make them single wield only) and simplify it down to :
Sword/Shotgun
AR
BR/carbine (halo 2 variants)
Splazer/Rockets (with vehicle lock on)
Sniper/Beam rifle (halo 2 variants)
PP (halo3 variant)
PR
Needler (halo3 variant)
Frag/Sticky/Spike grenades (if I had it my way the spike grenades would work similar to the grenades in GOW2)

All the other weapons could be left available for custom games

In terms of power ups I like the overshield and the Active Camo. I'm still not sure how I feel about the equipment tbh. I'm not sure I'd miss them if they weren't there, however many of the maps have been designed with their use in mind (particularly the bubble shield)

Almost every other decent FPS allows mid game joining and it is far, far better than the halo approach where more than 50% of the games have rage quitters screwing up the game.

Based on the way Halos ranking system works, would you be happy to join a game midway though to find out your team is 30 points down?

Also we all know the solution to this, get a party of 5 players (its the same solution to being teamed up with idiots)

idd i hate it when people quit, some nights it happens every game.

Though sometimes it's fun, played a territories game and the rest of the team quit, ended up 2 vs 5, still managed a killing frenzy lol
