Been looking at cars and i need a little advice, im after the best balance of performance/looks/cost i can get for my budget. im not a fan of debt so i want to buy my car outright, now my new job pays well so i figure within 2 months i can have enough saved to buy a car for my given price, the only thing is i can decide which.

The two that stand out for me personally are the ST170 and the Astra bertone, the ST for its performance/cost and the bertone for its looks/cost taking into concideration a GSI bumper sprayed and fitted.
Really id love to know what you all think, I dont want a mondeo as there is only me and the misses and id like to go for as new a shape as possible trying to keep to a coulor coded trim for asthetics.
Golfs at my price range have millions of miles and anything smaller is too small!
Ideas and thoughts?

Oh new job means i will only really be able to drive this thing on weekends, will use sparingly during the week but this amounts to about 40-60 miles at most.

Mk.I Focus would be your best bet at that money. As JanesyB said, you probably won't get an ST into the budget unless you're prepared to go for moon mileage, which I personally wouldn't.

They also apparantly drink fuel nicely.

If you can save nearly 3k in two months, why not buy a shed for £1000 and run it for ~6 months until you can save nearly 8k?

because i have a shead now, the missus has grand plans and i have a short window to work in, if im hounest its the first time ive had real money like this coming into the house and the money i have stated is the most ive ever spent on a car, at the very most i could justify 3k but the grovling it would take would be at its very limits.

she has the living room plans made and the kitchen is next, i think most of you know the position im in :(

Ah, I understand :)

What is the main aspect of that car that will affect your purchase?

Dont get me started on weddings, her relation decided to get married 2 weeks ago, needles tp say the missus has plans.
Im trying to salvage some manlyhood here but im failing, dramaticly.

Looks are my prioty, i want a smart looking clean car, somthing that has nice lines, and good praportions, manages to keep a modern look even though its getting on for (7) years old .... i hope :D

Mazda MX-5?
Fiesta Zetec-S (Mk5)?

Worth considering, both good cars (albeit totally different).

Man, the only advice I would give is buy some seeds and a watering can and "grow some balls" then save your money for your car.

Decorating and kitchens can be done cheaply via B&Q and look just as good as a job done which costs 3-4 times as much, especially with kitchens.

You won't find an ST worth having for that money, but you will an Astra as they loose value quicker than a prostitue who hits her 40's

buy a cheap mk3 mondeo, that has 1yrs MOT and tax, run it for one year, sell it on, and the money you have saved from your job in that time should buy a gd car ;)

Try (this is just a suggestion, don't shoot me) a Fiat Coupe 20vT :).

The looks are love or hate.
The performance will blow the other 2 right out of the water.
Reliability... may be 'interesting'.

You can buy one outright for your budget but you'll want to keep plenty in reserve for tyres, clutches, turbos, etc.

 13 posts in before someone suggested a mondeo?
Oops, my bad, he didn't want one... still... why not? miles better than an astra!

If I was buying a car to do 40 miles a week in it wouldn't be a Mondeo, they're just boring everyday transport. There's plenty of fun Cars for the cash, it just depends what you're after.

I had an Astra Coupe Bertone and it was a very bad buy so I would avoid that like the plague. Hateful car

Focus ST170 would be great but tricky for the price. What about something like a Xsara VTS Coupe?

Why did you hate the coupe so much?

Mine has done about 30+K of trouble free motoring with enough poke to enjoy it when you hit a back road.
