It's ok having all these text book qualifications but nothing beats hands down real experience and common sense. That's my excuse anyway.

This^^ after leaving school i started an apprenticeship as a precision engineer, (never finished it) after a week of being at the company they sent me to a engineering training center, when i got there i found there was two people who had just finished their degree's in mechanical engineering but once you put them in front of a lathe or mill they had absolutely no idea how to make anything.

Left school with 1 GCSE (eventually lost it as it was in a subject that I would need re-testing in after 4 years and didn't get retested).

These days I have:

1x BTEC First Diploma in Land-Based Technology
1x BTEC National Award in Countryside Management
4x GCSEs (Math, Science, Add Science and English)

Currently deciding wether or not I should look into doing an OU degree course (I can't stand formal classes) or wether I should focus on self teaching over the summer enough stuff to allow me to stand a reasonable chance of getting on an NVQ level 4 course in something with a large amount of practical/ volunteer work. Both as its advantages so its a very hard decision for me to make.

9 GCSEs / 4 A-Levels 1 x BA Hons Politics & Law.

Don't be put off by a degree, but only start one if you REALLY love the subject. The modules I got 1st class passes on were ones I really loved researching and had already read about prior to reading materials being distributed. Original thought counts for a lot in your degree. I started a post graduate course but had to stop due to family issues, but I got a pretty good job off the bat.

I worked in lacky industries doing some semi responsible jobs, which gave me a great edge when I started working at my present job. I worked nights though so that might not be ideal for everyone. All I can say is your worklife is half luck and half meritocracy.
