I'd always think that the side with a face on it, is the "front" of a coin.

Well it's heads and tails isn't it. The head is always at the front and the tail is always at the back. The same applies to coins.

It's not really a defining feature compared to the side that shows the value of the coin.

Queens face = back. To me anyway.

However after reading up on wiki, it seems the obverse (front) is always the queens head, and the reverse is always the picture.

The face of the coin is the front. So the Queen for example should be the front of the coin.
