I have had a Acer 5051 laptop for nearly 2 and a half years now, cost me £450 and its serviced me well but its time for a upgrade.

Looking to spend no more than £500 really. Hoping to get £100 second hand for the Acer to but towards the new one.

Looking for best performace for £500.

Hoping to beable to insall steam on it and play CS: Source at good playable frame rate

What would you recommend for £500 ?

Thanks Ben

See what you mean about the Acer Aspire 6930G Begbie, good specs and price worth streching the extra £50.

Acer Aspire 6930G
Intel C2D P7350 Processor 2.0 GHz, 1066MHz FSB, 3MB
NVIDIA® GeForce® 9600M GS with 256MB DDR3 Memory
16" Screen
Windows Vista Home Premium Edition
3GB RAM
250GB SATA HDD
DVD Rewriter

£547.47 inc.vat !

Anyone got one of theses ?

I don't think you're going to get better than the 6930G for the money. It'll easily handle HL2 and anything that uses the Source engine.

Other option is to scour the Dell Outlet I guess, but i'd take the 6930G.

If you can stretch to £587, then get the Acer 6930G with these specs:

* Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 processor.
* 2.0GHz processor speed.
* 2MB cache.
* 4GB DDR2 RAM.
* 16in full HD Acer CineCrystal widescreen.
* Resolution 1366 x 768 pixels.
* 250GB SATA hard drive capacity.
* Multiformat dual layer optical drive.
* nVidia GeForce 9600M GT graphics card.
* 1GB graphics memory.

Worth the extra £27 imho. :)

Got my wife this model for £550 about 6 weeks ago, probably from the same major retailer as yours. Although they don't appear to stock this particular spec now.

Fantastic laptop for the price! :D

Have a Dell Inspiron 9400 which is a couple years old now but still plays all the latest games and should be quite cheap second-hand. There are a couple 9400 models about but mine is the core duo model with 7900gs graphics built-in. It's the same as the xps but without the badge.

Think could probably find one for just over £300 mark imo.

Acer 6930G owners above, is it too big to use as a laptop on a sofa in the lounge? (would it be knocked onto the floor easily etc)

Also is the touchpad a bit uncomfortable with it being smooth and so far off centre? Or isn't it an issue?

Well today i brought the Acer 6930 for £600 :)

Specs are,

Intel Core 2 Duo P7450 2.13Ghz 1066 MHz FSB 3mb L2 cache
9600GT NVIDIA 1Gb Dedicated
320 GB SATA
4Gb RAM DDR2
16 inches screen
Windows Vista Home Premium

Great spec for the price just setting up now :D

Intresting thread, I finally decided today to buy a laptop as my main PC, Got a HP G70 lovely looking beast, 17" and decent processor etc. Anyway, just boxed it back up to return, the HDD is making a very unspleasant noise.

If it's not a fault it's a poor design.

Had a look at some Acers and the specs weren't quite there.The ones listed sound decent and worth examination though.

Well had the 6930G for a day now and carnt fault it !

I wanted a laptop for £500 that plays Half Life 2 and CS: Source (as thread title), i know this has cost me £600 but i think the extra £100 is worth it.

Installed steam and half life 2 and cs: source run perfect ! so smooth in the native res of 1366x768 and everything on high ! just what i wanted.

Not tried anymore games yet, because i dont have any yet lol

I highly recommend this laptop for the £600 mark.

Any questions feel free to ask.

As for XP Drivers not sure checked the drivers page for acer here not XP drivers listed. Maybe u could download XP drivers from seperate sites.

Thanks ben
