well i treated myself to this at the weekend after i read some good reviews on it. Got it home, installed + patch and then had a spin.

All i can say is after 1 hour of doing the drills and a bit of combat it is awful.

The controlls are poor and it has so many bugs it's untrue. Constant freezes with graphics and when doing training it just keeps repeating itself.

Graphics aren't too bad but not as good as the reviews have stated.

I think i may return it tomorrow and get something else

Yeah, not played the demo a lot yet but inital impressions aren't good. Didn't enjoy it at all really.

magicroundabout - Fallout 3 is a completely different game but I certainly found it instantly more enjoyable than Arma2. One of the best single players I've played actually.

Have you played OFP and ArmA?

What were your expectations before buying it?

What "similiar" games have you played before this?

Not played ArmA or OFP. Should i have? Are they better or would they have just given me a better idea of what to expect?

Similar games would have been COD/BF2&2142/Medal of Honour/Brother in Arms/Tom Clancy Ghost Recon. From memory.

Expectations from reviews and the online videos were BF2 but with far more gameplay and involvement and the campaign like COD4.

But what i experienced was nothing like. Maybe i expected too much?

Different strokes for different folks, I guess... Never had any of the problems you're describing. None of the games you describe having played are similar, and reading reviews is less useful than gouging one's eyes out.

One of the best games I've played! :D Great graphics, runs brilliant on any system and the storyline is great :)

Yeah was deciding which to buy and went for Arma 2.

I think i'll take it back later and maybe try again in 6 months time when all the patches have sorted the bugs out.

YES

OH DEAR

The game is not "AWFUL" at all, far from it, it is just nothing what you expected it to be, there is a difference between something being bad and an individual not liking it.

The game is NOTHING like COD/BF/MOH/BIA or Ghost Recon and NOWHERE on the internet will you see it referred to as such by anyone remotely competent.

ARMA is a battle simulator, not a run & gun FPS.

Also, you say the controls are poor, how so?

The controls enable me to do ANYTHING I want pretty much.

I would also suggest trying a few games on the OcUK Server to see the game played how it should be, may open your eyes.

Understood. +1 Capt

before you take it back get on the OCUK TS and ARMA2 server tonight, we will show you why this game is so great. Team play on massive scale warfare sim = epic battles with **** blowing up like you will have never seen in a game before.

As i said to a friend who i told this game about. ITS NOT a pick up and play first person shooter.

Its far from it.

It is a war simulator. You don't just run into the enemies and start shooting. Sometimes it can be 15 - 30 minutes before you can even move.

I tell you what, go on a server tonight called GOL tonight. They take the game very very seriously and it is so much fun.

I don't really like the single player campaign but.... playing online makes the game worth £50 in my opinion.

I had a game yesterday on the server with all of the people in the clan. It was like going to war.

We were flown in by a Black Hawk all covered arcs and moved in on the enemy. We were spotted after our fighter plane bombed the two t72 tanks.

Needless to say we came under fire, lost a few men, had to retreat behind a wall took out a few enemy and dragged my injured leader back whilst waiting for the reinforcements and medic to be flown in.

Unfortunately the enemy flanked us and our team was anahilated bar our leader who had received medical attention. We then flew back in the black hawk and parachuted in. We met up with our leader and gave him support and managed to get to the enemy base. We lay down some fire and took out majority of the enemy. However, we didnt realise the clever enemy AI flanked us from the right and the base was to the left. They took me out and we had no more respawns sadly.

But hell a game like that makes it so exciting. It lasted 1 hour and 44 minutes!

Just play on the server this evening and you will see why this game is amazing!

Type GOL in on the search bit and you will find it.

Oh! get teamspeak aswell.

EDIT: the controls side of things i feel they are great and add realism to the game as does headbob.

If it was like CS Source etc it would just be another shooter.

ok. so what you guys are saying is give the game time and learn more about it before dismissing it? i think that's fair enough.

As for my control problems quite a few times i seemed to be doing everything in super double time fast motion? Like Cooper was on speed or something. Buttons would get messed up and instead of firing my weapon it would put me into 3rd person view!

I've been going through the training to learn the controls but the instructors speach keeps freezing or repeating. When shooting targets on the range the instructor keeps telling me i'm doing it wrong even before doing anything!

Also i've tried the parachute jump several times and even when it gives me the option to open my chute it wont let me. i hit the ground and explode! Maybe my middle mouse button isn't the best but who knows?

as for flying planes etc they have never been my strong point on any game so i can't say that's bad because it's just me :D

Also screens merge into each other and takes a while to sort it's self out.

quite frustrating really

It's not a polished title which is what most people expect though and you can't deny that. The voice overs, interface and such features are poor for a modern title.

Who cares about voiceovers or interface? It is a MILITARY SIMULATOR, one that gives you total freedom on 225 square kilometers of open world, one that gives you unlimited possibilities via editor, one that is the most ambitious title on the market. And it is made by a company that has 40 employees and 1/5th of the budget companies like Codemasters or Infinity Ward have.

I think the term "Operation flashpoint 1.75 with a dress on" is bit unfair... Have you played OpFlash lately or are you going by rose tinted memories?
I have recently played OpFlash and although it's a good game, ArmA1 betters it in all areas (original campaign aside).

I think too many people expect pick up and play 'you are the hero' style gameplay.
In reality, you are expendible and there's not much heroics. Surviving and just getting through the mission is what it's about.

I think some of you are being a bit unfair on the OP given that half the problems he's describing seem to be bugs and unfinished code. I loved the original OFP but I also learnt my lesson from it, I'm not touching this until at least the third patch.
