Any way to tell the difference between petrol and diesel in a can?

They smell and taste different.

Though I wouldn't risk it as it's probably gone off and there's a fair chance it'd be mixed with two-stroke oil for garden machinery...

Petrol tastes quite sweet, diesel is more bitter. Pour yourself a big glass.

I concur and I'll add that petrol has a strawberry flavour and diesel is more of a lemon flavour. Have a taste, then you'll know four sure.

Also, diesel doesn't sting your eyes but petrol does. But as you don't know what's in the can it's a 50/50 chance so just put a little in your eye to test.

Can some people honestly not tell the difference in smell between diesel and petrol? I picked up a diesel nozzle once by mistake. JESUS, what a reek. Never again!

2 stroke mix is harder to tell and if it's lying around in a can then the chances of it being a 2 stroke mix are pretty high as it tends to be for strimmers and stuff.

Diesel just smells oily/diesely. Way better than the knock-your-socks-off nausea inducing cancerous fumes emanating from those horrid petrol pumps :p

You, sir, are a connoisseur.

I've got a couple of flagons of 2002 Shell Optimax in the cellar. T'was a good vintage.

Ahh, I know the year well - was an excellent harvest that year. Hold onto that one, I can only see a bottle of that getting more expensive.

Unlike the crap 1 ltr Tesco's special my wife keeps on insisting on buying. When I see baseball cap chavs buying the same thing it instantly puts me off. They say "so what, it still has the same effect and it's cheaper".

Pah, philistines!

What's the car. I did actually use a jerry can full of petrol with 2 stroke oil in a 1987 Polo. And yes it had been sat in a shed for many years.

It didn't cause any issues, however I don't think a modern car would be so accommodating.

Much the same as the older generation of people then? Could eat anything and no problems.... now we have peanuts killing people!

This TBH (although modern euro spec diesel should be not be too badly strong). And you will see the fumes evaporating out of the neck quite easily if it is gasoline.

Question is do you realy want to use it!

I thought diesel was slightly pink?

Or am I just an idiot?

Red Diesel has a (surprise) red tint to it. It's for non road use, such as work yards, tractors etc. It's normal diesel with a dye in it but the dye stains the engine internals and you can be done for having any trace of it in your engine should you be stopped at the roadside by one of the VOSA checkpoints.

OP, as the others have said, don't risk it. Apart from being anything from old and stale to mixed with oil, it could be the contents of a fuel tank filled with the incorrect fuel and be an mix of petrol and diesel removed when the engine was flushed.

Diesel stinks, and worse it carries on stinking for ages if you get any on your clothes or hands. Apparently diesel owners are incapable of filling a tank without splashing diesel all over the nozzle...

Quite simple really. Petrol smells like petrol and diesel smells like diesel. Assuming you've ever put either in your car you'll know whay it is.

This, it might even be neither and something totally diffrent. You have no idea if it has been mixed with anything.

You can also pour a little out. petrol will evaporate and leave nothing. diesel leaves a sticky residue. But this only works if you know it is one ort the other.
As everyone else has said it's not worth the risk.

If its that old it may be leaded ?
You can tell leaded petrol from unleaded quite easily as leaded petrol really makes your lips sting when you try and syphon it :D
