I swear i read something about the earth actually heating up BEFORE we drove cars and generally caused masses of pollution etc etc etc.

Anyone point me in the right direction or have i just made this 'fact' up? :(

Yes you are right. The Earth heats up and cools down in cycles, and ALWAYS has.
I am one of those who believe no matter what you do the earths atmosphere will always change in cycles.

Anyway if temps rise this summer it is a sign of a new ice age.

Earth has a cycle of heating up and cooling down, but seeing as the passed 100 years we have been burning carbon dioxide and the population booming, its only a matter of time probably long before we are all dead when we find out if we have sped up the global warming from out industries.

Yes, it is a constant climate cycle where the earth heats up due to the build up excess greenhouse gasses due to the ozone layer etc, which results in us experiencing an ice age about every 15 millenia or something.

It's just that with all the extra pish that we have pumped into the atmosphere over the last century mainly that we have accelerated somewhat compared to where it would normally be.

Mars and Jupiter are also warming up, same as the Earth is. Are their Governments also taxing their people with the excuse being Global Warming?...Oh, wait.

LOL :D.

I hate people who think we are causing this or heavily accelerating this. GO BACK TO YOUR FOREST HUT TREEHUGGERS  and leave peoples cars and luxury's alone !!!

EDIT: post may be exaggerated.

Global warming??? Forgive me, but it is ****ing cold here right now!

Also, after being away from NZ for 10 years I have noticed a significant change in the weather. It is snowing a heck of a lot more these days...

Of course, you clearly know best and are naturally more informed than the leading scientific bodies researching the area.

Don't think it's been sunny for 1 week straight for like 5 years - where I live.

Even if we're causing it, why are they trying to stop it, you won't stop fossile fuel usage until it's all burned up, might as well just use as much as we can now we still can instead of let new major economies eat it all up.

1) earth goes through cycles bla bla bla bla.... this is true

2) if your post is talking about "global warming" purely caused by humans then yes there is very decent evidence to suggest that humans have caused the rise in CO2/methane from 8,000 years ago

if you want a link it would take me a while and youd need an athens login

i strongly recommend no-one talks about point 1, there is several completely different reasons for this, which tbh are all true..

According to QI, cows produce far more "greenhouse gases" than all the transport on earth so we'd probably have more chance of saving the planet by going veggie than by driving a Prius :)

Needless to say I for one ain't doing either of these things any time soon. So the earth will warm up and the sea levels will rise. Well some people will just have to move then won't they and we all get to eat more BBQ's....

To try and cap atmospheric CO2 levels at 550 parts per million, thought to be the point which, if exceeded, would lead to a global average temperature rise of 2 degrees C or more.

We can still go about our lives and expand our economy whilst keeping emissions in check.

=

Which just isn't possible. If you look at the IPCC own papers. IIRC needs a reduction of between 20-40% in the next 20 years to stay in a moderately dangerous PPM concentration. This is simply imposable to achieve. The actual figures and report containing them are buried in the SC thread somewhere.

What do we do when the planet naturally raises the temperature above two degrees? People seem to forget that these cycles happen naturally as well. They seem to think accelerating it into a shorter time period some how makes it 10million zillion times worse.

Lets stop making stupid policies, stupid taxes, wasting money on wind turbines and oither "renewable" sources that just wont and don't work.

lets start securing our own power, start using reliable and predictable renewable energy. Research geo-thermal, jet stream wind production and other such things that don't mess the national grid up.

Let's concentrate on all pollution, not just stupid co2.

Most people think I'm some sort of Jeremy clarkson wannabe and just won't to pollute for the sake of it. I'm not. I just don't wont to mess the country up using bad sudo-sceince and pure lies.

I wonder how much debris, particles and gasses a single volcanic eruption puts into the atmosphere?

Yes the earth heats up and cools down in cycles, but over the last 100 years or so the atmosphere's co2 content and average temperature has shot up, way above what would have been caused by natural causes. This is agreed by almost all of the leading scientists on the subject. If we leave it to keep warming up, we will not just be enjoying nice warm temparatures, infact it will quite likely be the opposite;

The warmer it gets, the more of the polar icecaps melt. This releases vast amounts of fresh water into the oceans. This in turn is likely to stop the gulf stream flowing and would make the UK's temperatures plunge to that of other countriers of our lattitude; like Alaska!

The increase of water in the oceans would also cause huge amounts of flooding in low lying countries. A huge amount of the worlds population live in low lying areas, so this would cause huge humanitarian problems, likely to cost the taxpayer and industry billions.

The warmer weather is also likely to increase the amount of tropical storms places like the gulf of mexico see. This can already be seen in an increase of level 5 and 6 hurricanes over the last decade.

Maybe we can have an effect on the future, maybe we can't. But we all should be trying our hardest to reduce the effect. I certainly would be ashamed if in 50-100 years time there were far more people living in poverty and famine, more deforrestation, and generally a worse world due to things we can chance now.

I am waiting for the day after the week that follows the day after tommorrow.

Then we shall be doomed!
