best/most popular current FPS game?

The amount of skill needed in COD4 depends a lot on the server settings... with the right settings it need a lot of skill both in anticipation, aim and position. A lot of settings unfortunatly run settings that encourage lame playing styles and don't require that much skill.

That's not competitive play though which is what the OP was asking for.

Ewok have a look at http://www.quadv.com and have a look at some competitive CoD4 games to get an idea of how it plays in a real match.

I have played all modes and all settings and it doesn't even come close to the skill levels of cs.
I can jump right now on any hardcore mode server and finish top half easily on cod4 not having played it for a long time even.
If I try that on a good cs server i'll be getting owned left right and center until my aim is sharpened that is the gulf here.
I thought we were talking about individual skill obviously a well oiled team on cod 4 would pose anyone problems.

thing is with cod 4 theres that many hacks now playing i actually hate the game.

hopefully with cod tv and some of the other cheat protections this might not be as bad like xray. punkbuster is a joke.always will be.


cod 4 is probably most popular and cs but if you not used to cs youll get pwned :D . cod 1 and uo still best but most decent servers are dead. cod 2 still got quite a few playing but its a hack fest :( still see the same ol pros playing with there hacks :mad:
 
Hummm Left 4 Dead only really works if your in the same room as one of the people your playing it with, I spend a bit of last month playing it with my flatmate which was entertaining as we were shouting a lot....

Dunno what else to recommend as i hated TF2 but like css and day of defeat

If a top CoD4 player joined a public server they would rape the server so hard most of the players would leave. It doesn't happen because good players don't play on public servers. CoD4 is played with mods on to get it to a competitive state, CS is the same on both public and in wars. You've obviously never played the game on anything but a public, so slating it as a game where you just spray and hope for the best is ridiculous. If you're going to say a game is uncompetitive and requires no skill at least have played it properly.

I play public, come top 3 90% of the time.

Started again 3 times, as i got bored at looking at level 55 all the time :p

Good CS players don't play on pubs either except maybe the odd deathmatch. Anyone who plays on pub servers are just out for a bit of crack and casual game play.

I hate CSS, spray a full magazine from like half a meter and someone and he lives, he shoots me with a pistol 2x through my head calmly and I die. The weapon accuracy at short range in CSS is ****ed imo.
You aim at the torso, that gives you the biggest chance to hit, not the head...

Grab a three friends, load up skype or the program you use to chat.

Enjoy.

Playing Left 4 Dead with a group of friends is great fun.
 
Quake live is good now mate - none of the queues as someone else mentioned.

Also private servers etc are now starting to get implemented - still the most skilled online fps there is!
