Who killed PC gaming ?

nice. :D Chuckled on No.2 and No.1..

Interesting article, and I think it does hit some valid points. It is also highly US market based though, and there are a few flaws in it's assesments as the comments point out.
Well done, well made PC exclusive games like the Witcher have done pretty well, despite them not being available for the consoles...in fact well enough they did an improved version and can now afford to work on a console release, which I think says mountains, casual games and gamers are making a lot of money at the moment, but as the name suggests, gaming won't hold thier attention forever.

Thing is is that high street sales? Is that only in the US (the graph?) I imagine that graph is cherry picked for the article

Microsoft came first to mind after reading the threads title. 'Games For Windows', what a joke.

Then I looked at their top ten, they have Microsoft at no. 1, 2 and 3 ;)

I bet them figures dont include anywhere but America also i bet it doesnt include steam and the like services and online sales.

PC games piracy is the only major reason why. For some strange reason many PC gamers expect free high quality games to play with their expensive e-peen hardware config.....

Why on earth would a company want to spend $20M+ to develop a PC game and recoup a fraction of the cost as piracy will mean you sell much fewer games so you end up with a huge loss. That's why most games now are multiplatform designs to spread the risk around as you have the artwork already so why go platform specific and risk a huge financial loss.

That article is not very well researched anyway as Vista is the best OS MS have ever created. Its almost perfect now and much better than XP ever was after 2 years.

If you want to blame the OS best to check your facts and see that in fact lazy development causes the lag & driver issues as developers love to code outside MS DirectX specs.

Best thing all PC gamers can do right now is buy an X360 as a backup gaming device because PC gaming aint coming back anytime soon as a mainstream gaming platform. Too much damage has been done and right now developers/publishers are making huge profits on the 360 so do not hold your breath for PC gaming to make a mainstream comeback before the next gen consoles are out.

If you took away World Of Warcraft sales from PC gaming sales in the past year it would reveal how shocking the figures really are compared to consoles.

Lol why spend 20m AWPC, were happy with fan made games, or indie games which are usually cheap etc. Dont tell me they need 20m to make a decent game. For cinematics, and all sorts of expensive stuff maybe but thats there trouble for making that. When some games are fine with nothing but okish gfx and solid gameplay. Sure 20m games are nice sometimes but not always i mean i wonder what mercs 2, saints row 2, just cause, etc cost and they are terrible games some just dont work right out of the box and no patches and some just cant be patched it needs a total rewrite lol.

Yeah piracy blah blah. Make games worth the money then ppl would buy em if not dont bother or try to limit the games fund to make a decent game for smaller budgets. Seriously im sick of people and industrys blaming piracy, because simple fact is consoles get heavily pirated just as much as PC yet they dont say blah blah were loosing money cos of piracy. Also consoles are far more casual than the type of games you get on the pc. Piracy is here and here to stay their is no getting around it while the net is around even then it would still be there but in a much reduced form. So either make the games decent which ppl will buy and no drm cos thats waste of money as drm just turns ppl off buying pc stuff just as much as piracy effects sales.

Getting sidetracked with somit now so thats all i have to say.

I did buy an Xbox 360. Last summer. I sold it after two months. It's a great console, but it's like stepping down from a Ferrari to a Toyota Avensis.

Unfortunately I'd still much rather play the relatively few games that the PC is best suited to - FPS, strategy, mmo's and the modding, indy side of things compared to the majority shallow, micro transacted DLC infested crap that consoles churn out. :D

Admittedly the console does do some things well and there's usually an exclusive game I'd love to play that comes out once every six months or so, like Fable 2, but for me it really doesn't warrant a purchase.

Anyway I have to save up for yet another OS from Microsoft that's going to change the rules for games developers yet again. Oh wait, OS's are not a factor in the apparent decline in PC gaming compared to a stable unchanging platform like a console, right.

'There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics '

the most common one or misconception is that PC software is in a terrible state ... go ask Steam or Stardock ... they will tell you otherwise...

/snip yawn blah blah

seriously that is hilarious, console churn is awful but companies know they can throw out the same formula junk and the kids will keep pestering their mums to buy them it ... im not knocking them as its easy money and the kids market will always be massive..

personally i wish developers would slow down on PC only releases as i simply dont have the time to enjoy the abundance of quality out there... but at least i know the games i purchase i can usually enjoy for years and years.. unlike ... well yeah you know

Quite agree with that article:

Microsoft, Vista and the xbox360 is the biggest problem.

As for those statistics, add bloody digital download sales into them, retail copy's are primitive and old fashioned.

I think their #3 is really by far the #1.

The 360, not just for itself but for what it represents - the fact that the consoles are now capable many of the things that used to be the exclusive preserve of the PC.
Also incredibly important - the platform holder on PC (Microsoft) would now rather you played on 360 really.
For all that, I'm really getting into the PC, for the thriving indie scene, the price of games, the easy availablity of a back catalogue spanning the last decade, the handful of unique experiences (especially point and click and strategy) the slighly tartier graphics on multi - platform and the fact that I already need a good PC for animation and don't need to buy a console too.
But then I loved Dreamcast and Gamecube too, so maybe I am the kiss of death ....

too right, we should get quixote on that list, seems to be the main threat to pc gaming

Same :) I could never play games with a controller, seems way too dumbed down and inaccessible.

Playing an FPS or strategy game on a pad is my version of hell.

no truer words said, was just playing cod:waw on vet and playing it with a pad is very frustrating. simple reason is my aim is 10 times slower with a pad and i could complete the game in 1/10 of the time with a keyboard and mouse.

i know there are people who are great with a pad but no matter how much i play with one i reach a limit where i dont get any better. i usually finish average on online scoreboards but sucks cause i'd always be top 3 in cs :(
