The Swine Flu Thread - All Swine Flu Rubbish In Here

Well, my wife has officially been diagnosed with Swine Flu this afternoon :( She previously got pneumonia from flu years ago and only has 40% of ONE Kidney working so I have got her on 24hr watch at home. The Tamiflu is arriving in the morning so fingers crossed she will only suffer the 'mild' symptoms that many others are. I can only pray that nothing will come secondary to this illness.

So for those keyboard warriors that are sat there saying 'Oh, its only Swine Flu ffswtfwah', just think of those that have a higher chance of becoming severly ill from something that will only give a tickle of a cough to you. ;)

I hope your wife makes a full recovery.

Ahhhh :), I just qualified my first two rotations are at the glenfield and my last this year will be at the general.

Had many a trip to those hospitals when my grandad was alive.

Just to clarify the point ive been trying to make here Im not suggesting we shouldnt take Swine Flu seriously, but the media (and people in general) seem to be making this out to be worse than it is, anyone would think were all going to die. Your point in itself showed how dangerous normal flu is, many die each year, even healthy people. I just hate to see people misinformed and things being blown out of proportion. Anyone who has the disease I hope gets better quickly and without complication, I hope that tamiflu does the job for your good lady.

I do worry about this, however I am a professional worrier and will worry when I have nothing to worry about.

I do however take comfort in cold logic and statistics. So on the case of the 'first healthy death', they say there is no underlying health issues. However discount the media hype, the fact that there are no 'known' underlying issues, we do not know how good this persons diet was, whether they generally looked after themselves, history of other illnesses and frequency, which would in turn give us some idea as to how good their immune system was. I will take comfort in this. :)

There is the flip side, in that it may be starting to become more serious, however it is to early to start freaking out about that. I will however worry about this. :(

To all those who are affected or infected, I hope you and loved ones make a full recovery.

I'm coming down with either a common cold or this. Guess we'll find out in the next day or two if it develops on the sore head/throat and runny nose and general feeling **** that has suddenly crept up on me.

The media should never be shot down for this as they are providing the neccessary information we need in order to make us aware and try to keep these things to a minimum.

If there was no media, we would probably have a far bigger pandemic on our hands. Look at the speed in which the last pandemic spread in 1918. Far faster than this one (ok granted a war was about to finish and boat loads of people were being shipped about) but if there had been media there then, it would not have been hushed by many companies out there fighting and the spread of it would have been more minimal than it was. These things can never be stopped as it's mother nature's course of action but many lives would have been saved if there was media then as there is now.

The media are doing nothing but scare mongering people and giving mis information like that there are 14 dead from swine flu, which is simply not true. Ive got no problem with distributing information about any issue, people have a right to know, but just writing whatever you like to sell papers is what the media is about in this day and age.

Yes, 14 people have died from Swine Flu which is a NEW influenza and it will be splattered all over the papers and televisions until every person living in this country either reads it or watches it.

If someone dies of a disease spreading, even if the people have underlying health issues then I want to know about it. It does not make me any more paranoid than other diseases, it just makes me more aware of what and what not to do in the future.

BTW none of those 13 people died of the Swine Flu they died of their other conditions and happened to have Swine Flu at the time, which may have exacerbated the problem. Plastering Swine Flu death count at 14 over the front page in big letters does not portray that message. I would also like to know what you have learned to do and not do when you get Swine Flu, do go to the doctor if your unwell and stay at home? This is what you should do when youve got normal Flu rather that spreading it to your friends and work colleagues. I dont ever see anything about the 1000s that die from normal Flu on the frontpage of the Express, a most likely equally dangerous disease. The media could help people by giving them some plain facts rather than pages off rubbish and scare mongering.

Still what do I know Im just a doctor who learnt about infectious diseases for a month under the consultant the WHO chose to do their avian flu report...

If the media reported on everyone who dies of infuenza then it would be the thickness of a bible.

What i'm trying to say is that it's a new strain and that the media is reporting on everything that happens about it at the moment. Once everyone is aware, i'm sure it's going to be another archived problem that the world is left to deal with.

Sending out stories that 14 people have died from the Swine Flu i'm guessing is their way of trying so hard to make people aware of just how deadly this virus can be. It's mainly the headline that states that but read on and they will in fact state that they had underlying problems. At the end of the day, if they had not contracted Swine Flu then the underlying problem would not have been at its worst and they would in fact still be alive so theoretically speaking, the virus did in fact kill them.

Swine flu at my step daughter's school

I thought the hype had decreased a bit as of the last month or so but we got a letter the other day stating that a girl in my step daughter's school has been diagnosed with it.

I also got an email today from one of my customers asking about the keyboard foam cleaner I use as she was interested in purchasing it for her school to use on keyboards and decrease the build up for germs - relating to swine flu!

It's spreading around this flu, take not of other people's well being !!

all types of flu are always going to spread around. the reason its not in the media so much is because its nothing to worry about. little more than a harsh cold

Theoretically these people may have died with or without the Swine Flus envolvment, no one could tell you that. My issue is not with the fact they are reporting about it, thats good. But that theyre not giving any useful comparisons, for example ive not seen anything (in the news) giving comparative data with regards to plain old Flu, it is possible to raise awareness without sensationalising an issue. The facts are this is a new strain, we will almost all likely get it and that it is no more dangerous to most than normal flu. Yes people will die, but that happens with normal flu. Instead people are now going to be charging around swamping an already burdened NHS after tamiflu and vaccines that 95%+ of people simply do not need to deal with the illness.

This is the problem with how the media are reporting this issue. Your wife for example is obviously someone who has a reason for getting tamiflu and a vaccine when it is available, just like the aged, diabetics etc etc, the same people who qualify for the usual flu vaccine, but in all honesty once this is rife, those people are less likely to get the care they need because the NHS will be dealing with people who are paranoid. Obviously things might be worse, but that is how it looks atm.

A patient in Essex has become the first person in the UK without underlying health problems to die of swine flu :(

A poster from Solihull has become the third person in this thread to post that same news. Do try and keep up.

Underlying Health problems could be anything from Pneumonia to recovering from an operation.

I had Pneumonia twice last year and it has lowered my immune system leaving me suseptable to flu and colds, which sucks big time!

I work in a school and the mrs works for the NHS as a pharmacist for i know whats going on and in schools especially there is a fear about Swine Flu.

The government are going to be giving those with swine flu 2 weeks off work to recover.

I dont honestly think that Tamiflu will be as widely available as many would think.

I have to take 2 forms of ID, one being a Passport just to have these tablets handed to me tomorrow for the wife. I do agree with you in some aspects that the media is playing the game of creating widespread paranoia and anxiety to the country in order to profit but a guess again would be that some brandy drinking, cigar smoking fatboy pharmeceutical executive has got his finger in the pie of helping the media create this hype in order to make humongus profit also.

Apologies if I mispelt the big words. Got bigger things than typing corectly running through my mind. :)
