Monosodium glutamate (MSG)

MSG is a depressant

Proof?

Isnt it also addictive as well? Or did I dream that

I think you probably did dream it :)

can cause a number of side effects

Some people seem to have reactions to it but I've read a little on it in the past and I don't think there's ever been conclusive proof that it causes a condition and it's possible it only aggrevates an underlying condition that is already there in some people.

Err they have been using natural sources of it for 100s of years until it was discovered how to produce it on its own in the 20s.

Yup, it was used in it's natural form and there was never any worry about it then

It's a bit like salt but it's a cholesterol as I understand it. Also the sharp crystaline structure makes tiny lacerations on your tastebuds enhancing what you taste. Apparently.

I am not responsible for the spelling in this post, I've used words I don't use very often.

This sounds like complete nonsense. It isn't a cholesterol and it doesn't cut your tastebuds.

Glutamic acid is responsible for the nice savoury flavour in foods and is a flavour enhancer - things like parmesan, blue cheese, mushrooms, soy sauce etc all have plenty which is why adding them to food makes it taste better.

MSG is just a refined salt version and the most potent weight for weight. Some people may be sensitive to it but it certainly isn't the doom chemical that people make out.

Man up and get some flavour into your food.

It's not bad for you. The only studies that showed any signs of anything bad. Was pumping rats or mice (forget which) with huge huge amounts of the stuff. Well what do you expect, you can pretty much overdose in anything.

makes food cook quicker. not bad for you, unless used in ridiculous quantities. much like chocolate will kill you if you eat too much.

The problem with looking online is you can find what appears to be conclusive evidence for and against almost anything.

exactly all this "no unnatural stuff in my food" mentality is totality ridiculous. the chemicals made by man for foods are safer than most of the natural stuff.

hmmm.

Well the only things I avoid are Aspartame and Hydrogenated Fat, which is very easy to do.

Have done since about 2001.

natural > artificial

I've got a habit of reading the ingredients in food, it's surprising the carp that gets put in for flavour enhancing and preservative half of which I don't understand.

Cost, hence why M&S charge looooooads for their tasty food. If anyone ever goes to a store, get the Belgian Chocolate Milk, its delish :D

Not only that, but the amount of sugar that is in food no, is completely absurd. The higher up the ingredients list, the more of that ingredient it contains.
