GTX 295 question please

I would think the importance is on you trying to assess why you think your cards aren't working as well as you'd hoped.

If they are working as they should and you're just disappointed by the performance (I Don't know how) then a GTX295 is going to leave you even more disappointed.

It's not really a sensible idea to ditch something when you can't get it working assuming an alternative brand solution will fix your problems.

What is the actual reason why you're disappointed with the performance?

Crossfire scales extremely well in a lot of games. It's getting increasingly common to see performance improvements of 100% over a single card.
i game at 1920 by 1080 i was expecting to max out a lot of games but heres the problem.

Arma 2 : has its problems i know but i have spent hours tweaking the videos settings and it plays terriable very jerky and unplayable even with 2 4890s.

Crysis Warhead: some parts are very smooth with AA X4 and most settings on Enthusiast but again some parts go very jerky even when i lower settings to gamer and turn shadows down to mainstream.

Prototype: again plays very smooth but still have very jerky frames

Age of conan: again a very high demanding game but cant max out game and have to spend 20 minutes getting settings correct to get smooth gameplay

Stalker Clear sky : very very jerky even after all the patches

Now all these games should not run like this with my setup

Also my 1st card runs at 100c when gaming as in xfire with this particular brand with a custom cooler then are extremly close to each other. when i use just one card temps are ok.

Thats why im considering buying a GTX 295 or a GTX 275 s

I wouldn't use Arma 2 as a yardstick just at the moment. Incredibly buggy.

Disable AA and you'll be fine on Crysis warhead. ATI's cards have never been able to achieve AA very well. At a res of 1920 by 1080 AA is pretty unnoticeable anyway. Are you playing in DX10 mode? Because on a single 4870 at 1650x1080 Warhead is unplayable for me in DX10 mode, I think thats just an incredibly demanding game.

Stalker Clear Sky I would have thought your set up would pwn.

Do you have the PCS card?

Have you tried using riva tuner to increase the fan speed on the card? That would probably cool it down quite a bit.

I would hope the 295 is top quality considering how far down you have to bend over to acquire one.

Here's a little tip, it's not wise to label some one a fanboy while going on like a fanboy yourself.

It's okay to say the 295 is overpriced without being a fanboy.

Oh noes! Some one prefers Asda Smartprice 'Pot Noodles' over the Potnoodle brand! They must be an ASDA FANBOY! GET HIM!

:D lol

If you use a GTX295, you will have less vRAM (both physical and useable) than you have now.

It's a pointless "upgrade" which won't really be an upgrade. And is rendered foolish by DX11 cards being out pretty soon.

For basically the same performance, you are outlaying your hard earned cash, for a card which will soon be rendered obsolete by the release of DX11 and DX11 cards.

yea right...which will soon be rendered obsolete by DX 12, where does this stop? ... it doesn't, there's nothing wrong with the 295

mate please dont trash this thread i dont want a debate started between which is better between ATI or Nvdia

OP: Your resolution is really rather low (or at least the lower limit) for SLI or crossfire to really shine.

Just as a test, run GPUZ and let it record GPU load in the background while you play. Upon ocming out of the game check the usage of both, I wouldn't be at all suprised to see only one of those cards working hard whilst the other sits at about 30% usage.

At the start of this year I switched from 2 4870s in crossfire to a single 280 as at my res (also 1920x1080) the second card was doing barely anything at all. I found that the games that ran perfectly with one card didn't need the power of the second, and the games that needed a bit more power to be maxed out were still coming up short. In Crysis i was getting something like 4 more FPS with crossfire turned on.

Since going to the single 280 my framerates have been a lot more consistent and games have been much smoother to play.

In short, use GPUZ to see how much work each card is doing, if one is doing hardly anything then a 295 will put you in pretty much the same situation as you're in now.

My advice would be to stick with one very powerful single GPU solution unless you're playing at huge resolutions.

Nice to see that trolling is still in vogue. Benchmarking sites wouldn't agree that crossfire and SLI both offer benefits if they didn't ;)

Both sides produce good and bad cards, and yes I own both brands, and use both sets of drivers ;)

Everything goes in swings around roundabouts between the two, and has done for at least the last 5 years or so, be it fan quality, driver issues, QC issues, both sides have had them at various points :).

Not really, synthetic benchmarks don't show everything. Im not arguing the 295 isn't the fastest 'single' card out there, however other similar setups show similar performance for less cash.
When you consider that the futuremark listings may also be inflated by the Phsyx test, then it becomes pretty hard to push as decisive win, it appears the tests are from 3Dmark06 which is even LESS representative, being incredible CPU orientated nowadays.
