Absolutely FUMING (Arrogant GPs)

Not so much GPs, but also nurses...

I went last Monday because I have had a blocked ear for some time now and she said how it was full of wax, etc, etc... and to solve it: Use olive oil for TWO WEEKS!!!

I was like "yes, yes..." and got home and bought Otex ear drops and within two DAYS it had cleared up my wax and my ear was fine.

I think half the problem, just like my case, the older the GP/Nurse, the less they seem to be aware of current, better, treatments. (Because I had to have Olive oil put in many years back and it made my ear worse...)

TBH I'd probably have a better chance of diagnosing myself :s

My current and previous doctors have both been asian women, and both have been excellent - the only problem has been actually getting an appointment to see them.

I wonder if part of the problem is that a job as a GP is becoming an extremely lucrative career, which may be attracting people unsuited to the job but attracted by the vast salaries which can be earned if they 'play the system'.

To The OP

Find out the phone number of your Primary Care Trust. You can them call them to get the details of who to write a complaint to. The PCT control the funding for your GP's surgery and I believe they should be your first port of call for a complaint.

My last tangle with a hospital and Doctors, resulted in in my broken leg getting misdagnosed and torn tendons in my ankle.(happened Thursday night) I was told to walk around as much as I could as this would help the tendons heal, so I spent Friday, saturday sunday and monday morning walking around as much as I could bear. I believed the doctor and only agreed to go back on monday to stop my g/f and family nagging me about going back.

Saw a different doctor this time who sent me straight down for an xray and yep found I'd broken one of the bones in my leg. He was very apoligetic for the other doctor and did say he wasn't sure if it was broken or not as I was walking on it, but sent me for an xray to check.

I shall put in my pennies worth, as this is something that really winds me up. A couple of years ago, I was taking some medication (the pill) and after a while I started getting crippling back and neck pain, so bad I couldn't sleep, was crying constantly and had trouble staying in work for a full day. I also got really bad leg pain that had me in tears most days. I went to my GP 4 times, repeat, 4 TIMES! Saying that I think it's my pill thats doing it and asked if there was anything else I could take. Every time my GP said it couldn't be the pill, I must just have bad posture and restless leg syndrome, so he told me to sit up straight and gave me anti-imflamatories.
Of course, this didn't work, which I knew it wouldn't, so I carried on living in complete agony until eventually my hair started falling out. That was the last straw, so I decided to take myself of the darn pill.

Amazingly, within days of me stopping, all my pain went away. But of course, it couldn't have been the pill causing it....

I can't tell you how angry I was, my doctor just dismissed everything I said, because he knows best obviously. It's me feeling the pain, but he knows better, and decided to ignore the obvious panic and desperation in my voice. I haven't fully trusted my GP since then. Grrrr....

No indian GP at my local surgery but it seems all the Doctors at the hospitals are but even they are still pretty good.

I've had good GPs here in Cheltenham but some a couple of pretty bad ones at uni. Very tempted to get BUPA through work when my pay goes up a bit, don't get it for free but it is discounted so, if their adverts are to be believed, it might be worth pursuing.

Having Bupa cover won't change who your GP is.

I'm currently wrangling with my GP to try and stay with him. When I moved outside of Exeter a few years back he told me that I had to go and register at my local surgery.

But i've had the same GP since I was born, he's fantastic, really nice guy, knows his stuff, and tbh I don't want to take the chance with another.

So I keep going back to him with my problems - despite being told several times that "I really shouldn't". :o

So, you know what the problem is, you know what the best treatment is ......... and still you take up valuable time at the surgery ...... selfish ****!

There is one GP at my local surgery that I feel confident going too. Everyone I know locally also says the same thing and its now virtually impossible to book an appointment with her.

There used to be a male GP who looked like Dr. Phil. He was the most arrogant ******* ever and I'd come out feeling even worse whenever I went to see him. You'd be lucky enough to actually sit there longer than 30 seconds before he'd dismiss whatever complaint you had and would give you a perscription for something completely irrelavent to your symptoms and kick your *** out.

Last year he actually died from a massive heart attack while in church!

I also once went to see a GP about my terrible restless legs which began to hurt while sitting (like fire running up my leg) She told me to drop my pants and lie down and she then felt up my legs and told me its nothing to worry about. She then recommended me to wear those "stocking tight" things to see if it'd help, but then suddenly burst into uncontrollable laughter. While admittedly the thought of wearing tights is funny, she couldn't stop laughing and in the end I just had to leave

Have to agree largely with the OP. Ive been off work on and off since february with a back problem (disc pressing on a nerve). Doctor sent me for physio and said "it takes as long as it takes" and kept signing me off work. Having got more and more unhappy with no signs of improvement i went back to the docs to ask for "something to be done" i.e see a specialist. The doc suggested going back to work!! She was running late and basically just wanted me out as quickly as possible. Basically made me feel like i was making the whole thing up.

Fortunately my boss was really sound and would only allow me back if i saw another doc who took a totally different view of things and lines up specialist appointments straight away.

For me most GPs are victims of the system and im many cases simply dont have time to "care". The thing is its false economy because people end up having to make 2nd and 3rd visits to get proper treatment where a slightly longer initial appointment could make all the difference.

Olive oil does exactly the same thing as Otex, it softens the earwax. It may well have felt like it made things worse as the wax softened and moved around but there is absolutely nothing wrong with them telling you to use olive oil.

I always have problems with my ears, have to have them syringed every year or so due to having small ear canals and olive oil does the job just as well as otex plus is a lot cheaper. :)

Bad story and i hope he is better or getting better.

Doctors are only human, if in doubt seek a 2nd opinion. Go to A and E and see someone there.

I lost a very good friend a couple of years back because of a doctors error.

Basically he was complaining of chest pains, being out of breath and generally feeling quite lethargic, he went to our local surgery who sent him away with a leaflet about looking after yourself.

He went back a couple of days later and was told he "may" have a touch of infection, just take some paracetamol and plenty of fluids and it should clear up in a couple of days.

A few days later the pain was really bothering him so he went back again, the doctor said stop worrying, if you are that concerned get yourself to the hospital.

Anyways he walked home, asked his dad to give him a lift to the hospital, 15 minutes later he died of massive heart failure in his Dads car.

The person in question was 25 years old at the time...such a loss at so young an age.

Hahaha.
