£500 laptop for Half Life 2 and CS: Source

I got the 6930G

P7450 2.13ghz CPU
4GB Ram
9600M GT 1GB GPU
320GB HDD

Nice machine although its running on a 32bit OS so im not getting full value, I have to send off for the disk I believe.

Is it the case that this is easy to do (get a 64bit disc from Acer)? And what about the license key?

Edit- it appears it can be done through microsoft?

My one just arrived.

Advertised as:
2ghz Core 2 Duo
320GB HDD
1gb 9600m GT
4GB Ram

Came as:
2.13ghz Centrino 2
320gb HDD
1gb 9600m GT
4GB Ram
Windows Vista 32-bit

Kinda annoyed about the Vista 32 bit on a system with 4gb ram but otherwise im very happy with it. I was dubious about Acer as I've always thought they're cheap junk but this one feels high quality in and out. The only thing I would say is the screen is a bit small, maybe a little too small and the resolution is on the low end. But for £550 at this spec can't really complain.

Couple of questions:

I want to format and put Vista 64-bit on. Can I do that and still use Acer Applications like Acer Empower? (The system tweaking app).

If so, how? What's the best way to do this? Full Format, Clean 64-bit vista install and then install the Acer applications?

Thanks

That's exactly what I did :)

Install the audio drivers from the Acer site though, otherwise you won't get sound from the subwoofer - which is very impressive for a laptop :)

Where can I get the 64bit applications though? can't seem to find them on the Acer website...

Just ordered one of these I think some of you may have missed out on a good discount code, was £508 after £48 ish off :D

Have a Dell Inspiron 9400 which is a couple years old now but still plays all the latest games and should be quite cheap second-hand. There are a couple 9400 models about but mine is the core duo model with 7900gs graphics built-in. It's the same as the xps but without the badge.

Think could probably find one for just over £300 mark imo.

The XPS came with a 7900GS with a better heatsink or a 79050GT.

I have a 9400 with 7900GS and it theres very little thats quicker than it at the price. I was hoping to upgrade to something better, but without spending a fortune thats proving difficult. The 9400 also has a RAM limit to of 3GB so it won't see 4GB's. Which is another reason to upgrade.

I'm having a nightmare of a time getting Vista64 up and running on this Acer6930G

Some of the drivers won't even install namely the ICH9M-E/M AHCI SATA driver which among others will come up with the error: Will not work on this platform.

Windows update .Net Framwork 3.5 fails to install for some reason, says update was not configured properly and it's reverting.

Then there's the Acer Empowering Technology software packages, some of which work with vista 64 some which won't even install.

Keyboard hotbuttons probably need to be reconfigured as Acer E button doesn't do anything, nor does the Arcade button.

Anyone got a guide to installing VIsta 64 properly on an Acer 6930G?

I'm running win7 x64 on mine, and haven't had any problems with drivers. Iirc, I had to set the Empowering software to run in Vista compatability, but that's not going to make any difference for yourself ;)

I can't really offer you any solutions; just let you know that it can run flawlessly :)

I downloaded and installed the sound drivers from the Acer site
(Realtek Audio and Nvidia HDMI Audio) and also the acer eAudioManagement application but don't seem to get sound from the subwoofer when I test it in the eAudioManagement app.

How did you manage to get yours set up?

Are you selecting 5.1 sound and then clicking test audio? that doesnt make the subwoofer work on the default install anyway I dont think its actually used as a .1 sub channel I think its just on a crossover from the main speaker channels.

Yep that's exactly how I'm testing it because I notice no difference in sound quality or bass depth when I select standard or 5.1 sound output. In other words, it seems like the subwoofer isn't active in stereo mode and doesn't work when 5.1 attempts to activate it. So how do you tell if the subwoofer works?

It works exactly like that straight out of the factory so its not to do with Vista 64 thats just the way eaudio seems to work, the only way I know its working is to play some music with a bit of bass and see if it sounds ok.

Don't use 32-bit OS' to be honest, you need 64-bit.. Really, it is the way forward.. ;)

Thats what we're all doing, hence the discussion of drivers not working etc ;) I just saw that last question and checked the state of play on the default install before I wiped it.

Play some music ;)

The audio test doesn't actually test the sub, even at stock settings. Just set your audio to 5.1 - if you have all the empowerement software, change the audio settings until the OSD displays "(surround on)", and job's a good'un.

You'll know when it's working, as it makes a phenominal difference :)

How did you all get the 64-Bit OS?

Ordered from Microsoft? I think im entitled to the free 64 Bit upgrade but its a case of working out how to get it. All downloads appear dodgy to me, so im wary of going that route.

I also should have said I got a discount of £70.... well it was due to a joint purchase of this and a Acer Aspire One for the misses, so came to just over 700 I think for the pair.

does anyone elses sub woofer distort at the loudest setting ??

sounds horrible at full volume !

anyone ?

thanks ben
