My younger brother just got a PS3, he hasnt got a TV, hes got a monitor with a VGA and DVI connector.

If he connects his PS3 to the monitor with the hdmi to dvi lead, is there any way he can get sound? Hes for the OCUK 24" DGM Monitor, if i remember correctly it has speakers in it, so will the HDMI to DVI allow sound?

No it wont - think you only have optical out for sound...

I have my PS3 connected to a 2407 via HDMI-DVI cable and got an optical cable to some Z5400 speakers...

You can use the cable that comes with the PS3 to get sound (to PC speakers for example) but you'll need an RCA-to-3.5mm adapter. Then it's just a case of telling the PS3 to output video via HDMI, and audio via the multi-out.

Also bear in mind that that the monitor has to be HDCP compliant for it to work. Shouldn't be an issue, but some cheaper monitors won't have it.

Yeah I wasnt sure if it would still send video by HDMI so what TheVoice suggests should work...

I presume his monitor is HDCP compliant?

No you don't, I had mine connected to a DVI port and some PC speakers a few months back.

1/ Stick the HDMI-DVI cable in and hook it up, then go into settings and change the sound output from the PS3 to something other than HDMI (can't remember what the setting is called I'm afraid, but it's quite obvious).

2/ Find a female-female 3.5mm jack adapter, and a splitter. Then you just need to plug the PC speakers into one end of the female to female, and the splitter into the other end.

3/ Finally, hook the red audio out cable from the PS3 into one part of the splitter, and the white audio out into the other part.

When I had my PS3 connected to my PC monitor, I was quite lucky because my speakers have both USB and 3.5mm inputs, meaning I didn't have to disconnect anything to switch between the two. Also meant I could play my own music over GTA4's rather boring soundtrack, which made it a lot more enjoyable.

IIRC you only need HDCP to play protected content like Blu-rays, and digital movie downloads... the games don't require it I think...
