Dont want E

Yeah you can't download IE if you don't have IE to start with :p

Alt browsers will spread by word of mouth, Joe A will say to Joe B "Hey man dis Windoes 7 did not come wid IE init" and Joe B will say "Oh hai man, I use Firefox its wikkid".

Probably with better language skill though :)

Oh yeah we would not be getting the current prices for Retail in the EU if IE did come with it so we are indeed better off.

So E is more of a good thing than bad.

It’s all hassle though isn’t it, Joe A still has to ask Joe B to bring round the install file on a memory stick or whatever.

What should have happened (although I know this would never) is you get a screen pop up asking which browser you would like to try out and then it goes off and downloads/installs it.

Like I said though would never happen.

That I do not disagree with.

However that does not change the ruling and it has set a horrible precedent. Where will hey stop. How about we take out the calculator or note pad, photo preview software and everything else. Hummm nope still not seeing how you think the ruling is good.

I think mrk is right in saying it'd be good to open up peoples minds to alternative browsers, but I'd expect to get a browser with an operating system full stop, and I find it stupid one can be provided without any, or a means to obtain one, in this day and age where the vast majority of home PC users use internet browsers all the time when on their PC, and do little else.

Also, the need for a clean install is vital, and i've only ever performed an operating system upgrade when trying to retrieve files from a system before it's formatted, and the OS was damaged in some way. I always clean install and keep my data on a separate partition, making it quite a hassle-free process.

It does allow those who know to install Opera for our parents/grandparents/non-tech-friends and not have IE pop up and flood them with Malware at every opportunity, though...
Also if IE isn't installed, it won't try and hijack URL clicks from other apps and such. Can't see IE not shipping with Win7 as a negative thing at all TBH.

It's always allowed you to do that. Like my parents are running firefox.
Software like steam will be looking for the ie.exe and wont find it. It is stupid and it will cause problems.

Ok I see where the conflict of opinion came in, more confusion :p

The ruling itself I do not agree with but Win7 not coming with IE and thus resulting in us getting a full retail product at significant discount as well as giving more people than otherwise would have, the opportunity of using other better browsers.

Cause and effect I guess but re: the ruling, Today it's Microsoft so who knows who it could be tomorrow.

Herein lies the biggest issue. Some applications specifically try and find IE and so unless there is a way to change it then they won't work.

I don't think any recent applications look for it though, especially not mainstream ones.

? they'll just go download IE. Nothing will change. If they didn't know or download an alternative before. they wont now. They now Ie and will stick with it.

Ie is a nice browser and has more than enough features for most people. Most people don't care or wont to now about extensions.

No see they won't.

The "Average Joe" will never upgrade his desktop or laptop from XP/vista to win 7 and new laptops and desktops will come with IE or Firefox preinstalled.

Already there is alleged bullying tactics by MS to force large PC manufacturers to ONLY preinstall IE by offering them discounts allegedly.

personally I have always locked IE Away with the most gruelling security settings, its security holes are terrible. Heard IE8 is a gigantic improvement though, but meh firefox all the way, its safer and faster.
The fact I can actually install windows without IE is a godsend for me.

A) all the innards will still be there. You'll basically be missing the exe file.
B) some software like steam wont work without
C) IE is not security ridden and hasn't been for some time
D) it opens a silly precedent and what else will EU ban when this doesn't work,

This is going to be such a pain when work eventually upgrade to W7. It's all well and good doing it once on your own machine but on an entire network? I hope it's easy to deploy en masse.

Am I wrong in thinking Apple ship safari with their OS?

IF so this is complete lame, I don't care about market share, if Apple can ship with a browser then MS should be allowed to as well.

Well this is where it gets interesting. For the record I think the EU are ***** and can't understand why Apple aren't being investigated (especially for price fixing there horrid iTunes store) but that's a different story.

Back on topic. PC vendors who preinstall the O/S can actually include a browser. So I imagine you'll get a preinstalled version of IE. Which is great imho.

The problem you have when you don't install one is none-tech savvy PC users trying to get one and could get it from a dodgy place infected with god-knows what. Also how do I get on the net to download one? If you only have one PC how do you get it? Well you have to pay P&P to be posted one (around £4).

EU are a bunch of money-grabbing ****-wits.

P.S. I beleive Mac OS comes with Safari and that's it - I know at one point MS stopped releasing browsers for it though, obviously, there are other browsers available.

Well in my opinion it shouldn't be one rule for one company & another rule for another, that is just pure idiocy.
