So i've recently dusted off my trusty Logitech DFP wheel, and been sampling the online delights of GRID (couldnt resist the 50% off bargain on Steam) against my mate who also just got a DFP. I love the game, but also would like to try some proper online hardcore sim racers.

Now as much as I hate to admit this, i'm also a graphics whore, so are there any good sim racers which have decent graphics out there ?

I've heard reports that the forthcoming NFS: Shift, will be more sim based than arcadey, any truth in that ?

Cheers.

+1 Couldnt resist the bargain DFP I got for £18 brand new

As far as I know there aren't any racing sims that look as good as or even close to GRID.

Probably rFactor just about edges out GTR Evolution on the looks front, but only just.

rFactor with decent mods and all the driving assists off is what I would recommend. GTR Evolution is also good, while iRacing (subscription reqd) is the most realistic you're going to get.
As for which mods it depends what type of racing you're into. Personally my favourites are fsone 2008, and the EOAA mods such as DBR challenge, plus a whole ton of tracks. As for making the game prettier enbseries adds configurable motion blur, HDR, soft shadows etc etc which when set up right makes the game look very up to date.

rFactor, if a little league-centric, is absolutely fantastic as an online simulator. Im playing a lot of F12009/Megane cup/DTM at the moment, and trying to figure out how to sneak in a Steering wheel without the wife noticing....

NFS:S looks to be more planted in the real world, but I'm not sure exactly how realistic the driving mechanics are. The vids I have seen have some pretty bizarre looking physics.

Games like GTR2, GTR Evo, Richard Burns Rally, Live For Speed, rFactor, iRacing (especially this one) have very detailed tracks and cars, they just lack the shiny look of GRID. Trust me, once you really sink your teeth into sim racing and you fall in love with the real art of driving fast the lack of shiny post processing becomes less and less of an issue.

+1 for GRID, good game.
It's not a sim, not even close.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

I'm interested in IRacing, but going to see if I can check it out first, due to the monthly subscription....

Cheers.

This is true. I'm still not good at GPL after several years of playing.
It's only a fiver to buy and there are mods that will run it at 60fps @ 1920x1080.

Go to subscribe on the iRacing site and use promo code PR-RADICAL-ONE-MONTH

It's a one month free trial courtesy of Radical, all stock content + the Radical car and Silverstone circuit free (which you get to keep if you renew). Can't say fairer than that!

I'd say GTREvo. I've tried iRacing... It was just too serious for me, the driving side was fantastic but I didn't find it anywhere near as fun as I find GTR.
ar more cars and tracks in GTR (rfactor would be the same)

Dont get grid if you want a sim. Its physics are rubbish. (Although its still a fun game)

Go for live for speed, its brilliant with a wheel.
