Why do people bother "working out"?

I guess I fall into the fit and healthy but still use the gym catagory.

I wasn't overweight, I could eat anything I want and still not put weight on. I recently joined a local david lloyd and have started going the gym and playing tennis.

I go normally 2 times a week, and have recently started playing about 6+ hours of tennis a week too (I used to play everyday when younger.)

It really gives me an uplift after a hard graft in the gym. I also find it helps gives me extra energy, confidence and enthusiasm to do other things.

Another thing to... is it just me or do girls in the gym seem more randy and up for it than normal girls? And they normally look much better! :D

the satisfaction of doing well in in sport / competitions. Now I workout for my future job in mind but if it wasn't for sport i would have never started cardio and weights.

Unfit unhealthy males end up with unfit unhealthy females, there one big reason :D

I think this thread should be reviewed in about 20 years time, when by then, the Wayne and Waynetta lookalike posters still 'dont get it' about going to the gym and being healthy .

I've never been to the gym ever, never will to much effort,

I have noticed personally my stamina ect has dropped, since i stopped a lot of my sports for BMXing, I used ot be doing Athletics 3x a week, football 2 times, and fitness training with football team 1x a week, I've noticed a lot since i stopped all that i'm unfitter, but at the same time, doing all that i had no life during the week.

Guy with a belly doesn't have the right to expect a women without a belly, so being healthy bumps prospects for a girl with a nice body. :D

Because:
a) I enjoy it
b) I've always been active and done lots of sports and exercise
c) I have a primordial enjoyment of the endorphine release I get from pushing my body
d) It makes me feel better about myself (this is a long issue which would deserve it's own thread so I shan't go there)
e) I've made a lot of friends from sports (rugby, squash, weigh training etc...)
f) I don't have computer games/consoles and don't enjoy being cooped up in the house all day
g) Our bodies and diets are rubbish to how they used to be so I'm redressing the balance and synergistically improving my lifestyle and health.
h) I'm not a big drinker and would rather spend my money on food and keeping fit
i) I like to challenge myself
j) I feel stronger, more alert and it's beneficial to me in my life and sports (certainly rugby) but also just for life in general, moving stuff, carrying stuff etc...
k) I'm healthy, never get ill, and have a zest for life, plus my sex drive is through the roof
l) As a side effect I look aesthetically more pleasing (for myself) but this is just a side effect and not the primary reason.
m) I'm a bit of a neanderthal
n) I don't want to get fat and unhealthy

Anyone ever heard "going to meet jimmy" in reference to going the gym?

Where you going?
I'm going to meet jimmy

Mate said it once

I go to the gym to look at hot guys tbh...

Just kidding :p I go because I actually find it fun, it improves my fitness, it makes me feel good, it makes me look good, which in turn makes people tell me I look good, which again makes me feel good.

So it's all good, innit? :D

I go to the gym because I want to stay healthy and strong into middle age and beyond and I don't look at it as hard work. I can work out while listening to the radio with my earphones in.

Plus most of the time there are some really hot women at the gym :)

I see where you're coming from and often wondered this myslef. What makes me laugh, especially on these forums, is the 'bodybuilders' who, when put to the test couldn't run after wheelchair bound cripple whose wheels had fallen off, yet they think they are somehow 'fit'.

If I want someone to left a heavy sofa, I'll call them.

I remember a Johnny Ball "Know How" where they put a bodybuilder up against a cyclist. They had to blow up as many balloons in a minute as possible. The body builder managed 3. The cyclist was on his 20th when the clock stopped. They then went through a series of tasks and with obvious exception to the heavy lifting, the cyclist won them all, including the one where you have to walk in a straight line without looking like you've just got off a motorbike.

In actual fact, body building to an extreme is more likely to cause you more issues later on in life.

I enjoy cycling and rowing and play an hours football once a week (5 a side). These by their very nature mean I'm fit and healthy and could out perform a bodybuilder in almost all normal day to day sports.

i don't care one little bit...neither do women

Yes, they do, whether they admit it or not.

Personally I would love to have a superb six pack and large muscles but I simply choose to spend my time playing tennis, squash, football etc. instead as I find it far more enjoyable.
