Hey,

Basically my girlfriend will be starting here Masters very soon and we need to replace her ageing current laptop.

Now in the past we have had a lot of problems with laptops, ranging from slow, laggy and unable to play 720/1080 content to laptop chargers constantly breaking (her current laptop a HP, shes replaced the charger 3 times in 2 years)

It needs to be quick and last around 3-4 years without trouble. Preferably able to install Windows 7 or come with Windows 7.

Thanks.

Currently using a Asus laptop with Intel P7350 (@ 2.0GHz) & NVIDIA 8200M chipset/GFX & that handles HD through HDMI fine :)

Regarding the charger failing, ever considered a surge protector like this?

In all honesty we have no idea what could be the problem, sometimes the connector going into the black box thing just breaks and you have to wiggle it to get a connection, other times the black box just breaks and we've even had a wire explode in flames.

Just seem doomed with all chargers lol.

yeah it's usual connectors breaking, wires being pulled out. Nothig you can do abouttaht. But buying non oem replacements at a fraction of the prices.

What's her degree in, any special software?
I'm assuming you are going to need
Tower, K+M, speakers, Monitor, printer?

it's a laptop mate :p

You'll not need to spend anywhere near £1000 for that!

What size screen is she after?

Currently has a 17" screen.

Basically were just fed up with buying £600-£800 pound laptops that take 30mins to load windows, take forever to load applications, have a 2min battery life and being tricked at the local high streets. The current laptop was sold to us claiming it was 64bit and could play HD, its neither.

Dell laptops are pretty much the best value for money, and they have an excellent warranty service so I'd highly recommend browsing their range to see what suites your needs. forum.notebookreview.com is an excellent resource for more information :)

Dell Studio 15 is worth a look, although if she's willing to spend £1,000 the Studio XPS 13 may appeal to her as it's smaller, lighter and rather stylish. Very nicely specced too.

If your heart is set on spending a grand I can recommend the Dell Studio XPS 16. Starts at £799 and you can spec it up.

But for reliability and speed you cannot beat a mac, I've had mine for 2 and a half years the only thing to go wrong is the DVD drive which got replaced. It's only got 1.83 GHz processor and 1Gb of memory but it boots in about 20-30 sec. An I can run Photoshop, Fire Fox, iTunes and Adium (IM client) all a t the same time with no problems.

No viruses. :D

The only thing is the compatibility with the software you need to use though so I'd check that out first.

Of course a lot of people will disagree with me on this but hey just throwing it in the mix.:D

Considering that a stated requirement was being able to play HD content, I'm guessing that they don't need to be running SPSS 24/7.

Macbooks boot and load apps very quickly, have good quality batteries and have a long useful life. They can run the required app and come in under budget.

Don't rolleyes me please, I'm merely pointing out that for someone using their laptop for work a lot, it's going to be an annoyance having to switch from one OS to the other. I'm not saying Macs are crap, I'm just saying that it doesn't seem practical. I'd say exactly the same thing if you'd recommended a system with Ubuntu on it.

Yes, but running it in Bootcamp the entire time somewhat negates the point of getting a Mac.

Not really, I have *only* Window 7 on my macbook pro. I bought the Mac because they are well made, fast and don't fall apart. If you buy them just after a refresh, then they are pretty well priced.
