What are the Decent Brands of the moment?

I never thought much of Samsung in the laptop field until I bought my Q210 from them. Amazing little machine, fast, good looking and only a touch ovr 2kg with battery.

Well I did actually mean the gemstone blue, is there a gemstone non blue?

I have just got an Acer Aspire 6930g and it looks very similiar apart from it being black.

One thing that might be annoying is that finger marks quickly gather on the shiny back of the LCD.

OMG I forgot about Alienware!! Ok my plan is over the next few days to formulate a list of laptops that I am considering and then I shall post them up on here and see what you think. :) Thanks so far for the advice

i can tell you now, if you think dell's support is bad, ACER will be 10x as bad. they are useless. We log countless calls on laptops with both companys at my work and with acer you might as well just give up before you start.

I don't blame you.

Sorry if I missed it but how much are you looking to spend?

£1000 or less. However I will raise that if it is absolutely worth it.

EDIT: It's weird how some people have had bad experiences with Acer, my Uncle who works for EA has a high specced Acer and has had no problem with it or their support at all.........

My personal experience in terms of build quality, reliability is:

Thinkpad > Mac > HP > Dell

I currently use a macbook pro, which is a beautiful piece of hardware, but you can't beat a thinkpad. The build quality is incredible, a step above anything else i've used, although the mac comes reasonably close.

I have looked into Lenovo, a very good brand however I do not think it's fit's my usage ideals. Although incredible for a more business environment I am also going to want some graphical power for Photo Editing and perhaps the odd game.

Which Macbook Pro do you own? Although incredible machines I cannot help but think that they are very overpriced for the hardware that you get.....

I have also noticed that Alienware do decent laptops. But they also seem slightly overpriced......

i've got a december 2008 15 inch 2.4ghz one, and its eaten up everything i do, although i don't do photo editing or gaming on it, so i don't really push it that hard. But i believe plenty of people do, you'd be best to look in the apple hardware forum for photo editing/gaming performance.

they are expensive undoubtedly, but i don't think they are particularly overpriced given the quality and how good OSX is.

I have been told by a few people that I should be avoiding Acer. This has led me to narrow down my choices to Sony and Apple. I think this is a reasonable choice. Can anyone recommend me any specific Sony Vaio's for sub £1000?

What do you guys reckon about the Sony Vaio range? I possibly am getting one in the next week or so. I've always thought Sony's stuff in the "PC" world was akin to Apple's. Nice looking - but expensive for the spec.

Dell used to be great in all areas, always used them---now they are totally USELESS. They moved the call centres to "elsewhere" and they have no idea what they are selling, no sense of urgency... as I said useless

shocking.. shame the hardware is still good
