Krav Maga

I joined the krav Maga club in Edinburgh a wee while back but other commitments meant that I couldn't go as often as I'd have liked to. The guy that runs it is an excellent teacher. Everything you learn is all applicable in scenarios that you may just find yourself in one day. I'm thinking about joining again as I quite miss it. You'll learn very useful hints and tips from day one, so go along and see for yourself what they do, I'd highly recommend it;)

What a load of cheorographed (sp) nonsense.

Tried krav maga for 3 weeks. Any self defense course which has the attacker doing one move and then standing still whilst you then perform a 12 hit combo is nonsense.

Learn boxing/thai boxing/BJJ .

Just my personal opinion.

what a load of tosh. It is used in combat. The more advance you go the more the trainers will throw combos at you and the less time you will have to react.

Is this the one at drumbrae?

Because some of them wouldn't work in a real life situation:D

Thinking more about the fact that its designed to do maximum damage and cripple people..Its a military system and if you use it on the street and end up gouging some dudes eyes out for throwing a drunken punch at you, youre gonna be in trouble :o

True but from what i have seen its about knocking them down and getting away. You dont have to use all the techniques.

Its the same with any martial art, its about self restraint and knowing just how much force is needed.

I watched a video where the trainer was showing various scenarios and how KM would help. I was surprised at how little force the guy had to use to avoid getting choked. Made it look easy.

Im not sure it is the same..

Most martial arts arent based on the idea of defending against a fatal attack. Arent based on putting someone down as effectively as possible :o

and the whole point of krav maga is that you dont show restraint..you do whatever it takes to end the confrontation as rapidly and brutally as possible.

i wonder who'd win? Chuck or Roy
:D

The one with the mustard.
I really do think this will be useful yes it is brutal. But pretty much up here if you get attacked you are gonna be screwed. At least if you do this you will have some intimidation factor.

It is the same, you need to show restraint and knowledge of your own skill.

You certainly wouldn't use the full power of KM if it was just some drunk who can barely stand as you would if it was a real life and death situation. In that case, no, don't show any restraint and do whatever you need to live!

No, it isn't. If you are being taught that at a 'Krav Maga' class, you are not being taught Krav Maga, but some alternative program incorporating some moves from Krav Maga.

You cannot seperate the philosophical and mental aspects of a martial art from the physical.

On a little side note .....

Krav maga is not like martial arts such as kick boxing or Judo. Krav Maga has no set rules or moves for varying types of attack. It is your own interpretation (coupled with your instructors knowledge) which makes this very different to anything out there. The one big difference in krav Maga is that you are taught to defend and attack (when needed) in a very small space. It's all about bringing the attacker close to you and not keeping them at arms length (this gives them time to thiink and react accordingly). Another thing that surprised me was the areas of the body you are taught to attack, there are no punches to the face in krav Maga (knuckles are small bones that can easily be broken by a hit to the face), instead, elbows replace a clenched fist and areas that are punched with a fist are the biceps and thighs (dead arms and legs). The attacker can also be used as a sheild when you advance a little further should you happen to find yourself up against more than one person. It's also a fantastic way to keep fit and really helps you build your confidence up. I'd recommend everyone give it a go;)

I did it for a few months while I was in London. It's intense and extremely aggressive and it's not supposed to be done as a sport; it's about as serious as you can get. Everyone has reflexes, but whereas most people flinch away as a reflex, they teach you to attack and be far more aggressive than you'd ever normally be. I had some doubts about how effective it was so I asked the instructor and he told me to grab one of the (flimsy) knives and attack him with it. Needless to say 5 out of 5 times he disarmed me and put me on the floor before I had a clue what was going on. I didn't even touch him, and this was a guy who was about 5'5" (I'm 6'2'" so had a much larger reach).

I paid £10 for a 2 hour session, on a "pay as you go" system. That worked great for me since some weeks I could go to both sessions, and others none.
