Will You Buy Windows 7???

Right, downloaded the RC and installed it today. Very simple install, took 20 mins or so and it works fine. Looks very similiar to vista, haven't noticed much difference yet other than the smart startup splash screen. Haven't installed games yet and I can't think of much to go away and do with it.

I have no problems with Vista and only one problem with Windows 7 that means I won't be installing it until release.

The one problem is the lack of classic start menu - there's a guy who's made one which I will be using but it's very stupid, imho, to not include it.

There's no classic start menu because it's outmoded and pants. The inability to search the start menu is possibly my biggest annoyance when I use XP.

Well this is what the MS store currently looks like. Are they really "giving up" so to speak on the Promotional pricing after mere days? Wow.

Why do you need to search when you know where something is?

Don't get me wrong I'm making the switch to Win7 for all the reasons above, but I understand the reluctance to leave XP/Vista for those that are comfortable with it.

@jaybee, it's not so much 'giving up' on the promotional pricing, but instead they allocated a certain amount of stock to be on the offer. Once that stock had been all purchased, they moved on to Phase II pricing, which you have shown. Because different companies have run out at different times, they have moved onto the different prices at different times. And they're a software competitor, best remove screenie :p

@Mattus, I know what you mean and I'm very comfortable with the new start menu now, but I was so used to XP, the change did take a bit of getting used to. I had a very well optimised start menu so that i could get to where i needed to in seconds with some movements of the mouse, rather than having to type anything to find it..

To be fair, it's still available to pre-order at the low price from other participating retailers. The MS Store is run by an external company anyway so it doesn't surprise me too much, but you would still think they'd be last one to go to the normal pricing.

I never really use the Start menu search for files, just programs, but it's worth its weight in virtual gold for that. So, so much quicker to use than having to go looking through dozens of folders.

Say I want to open Excel. (Say also that I don't open Excel frequently, so it's not on my frequently used programs list.)

Classic way: click start, click all programs, find Microsoft Office on my huge list, mouse over it, click Excel.

Vista/7 way: Windows key, type 'excel', enter. Takes less than two seconds.

I couldn't dissagree more.

The new style menu feels like its computers for children, or idiots who don't know their way around a computer. Search is not hard to get to on classic menu.

I'm not talking about getting to Windows Search, I'm talking about searching the start menu itself.

I think most people who dislike the new start menu haven't grasped the power of being able to search it. There really isn't any need to scroll through the list at all. You can just type a few letters of what you want. You don't use the mouse, so it's faster.

But now you can just hit the windows key and type what you want.

ETC: I want the device manager.

Windows key > type "device m" > enter done.

XP > Ermmmmmm..... where is it again........ oh yeh.... find it...... done.

Personally I find XP really awkward to use now, largely due to the fact that the search box isn't there. If I want to load something like Remote Desktop, I can just hit windows key then type mstsc and hit return - so much faster. I use it not only as a search box for start menu files, but as a run box too.

I'm personally glad that MS have removed the classic start menu. The only reason people still use it is because they haven't bothered to take the time to get used to the 'new' style, which let's face it, is now basically 8 years old. I realise people are going to moan at this statement, saying that MS have removed user choice and are forcing users etc but if that's such a problem, why even bother to move away from XP? Keep the old OS with the old GUI if it works so well for you.

Besides, with a bit of playing around you can get the 7 start menu to work similarly to classic start anyway. One example I saw was to rename the 'Downloads' group on the start menu to something like 'Programs' and then change the target location to the start menu path. Sure it's not ideal but the programs menu works virtually the same then, except you also get the added functionality from the rest of the start menu.

Personally I hated the XP and Vista start menus when I first started using them. Now I find it hard to go back.

Who needs search when you can pin documents to the tool bar. Right click on word and then select the document you want. I couldn't do with out that feature, it's bloomin brilliant.

Finally pre-ordered mine for £50 could have got it cheaper but I wanted use of paypal as I can they change my banking details before payment is taken out in October.

Having used XP for many years, Vista for about 6 months & tested the RC of Windows 7, I am looking forward to using Windows 7:

a) Everything installs a lot faster so it's less hassle
b) All the drivers are virtually there i.e. auto installed from Windows 7 if your not fussed about having the very very latest drivers, although I am fussy. :)
c) It's also a lot quicker that Vista 64bit all round, when I right click on desktop with Vista 64bit it takes many seconds to decide, with Win 7 it doesnt as example.

I just hope compatability with all games will be fully sorted, as well as any sound issues.

I never really got on with vista. Things just seemed to be changed for the sake of change and not really well thought through

However, now they've changed the name given the UI a facelift and done a few minor tweaks I think it's great!!

If your not having problems with vista great. That wasn't my experience of it.

Funny thing is I've never met anyone outside of Internet Forums thats ever had an issue with Vista (please don't blame Vista for the lack of 3rd party drivers by lazy sofware developers either). I installed it in Beta form and have been running it ever since on machines of all ages and specifications and I'm still waiting for my first problem. My daughter runs an IT department and she reports the same, Vista - never had any issues. The only people who I know ever to have had an issue with Vista is the press and lets face it the press never let the facts get in the way of a good story.

All I'm saying is if you want W7 fine I don't have an issue with that but let's not kid ourselves that one is getting anything other than a revamped copy of Vista repackaged and rebranded. I don't mind that at all but what I cannot abide is the duplicity and trying to pull the wool over the publics eyes.

I have been running W7 since first Beta release so one can't say I havent' given it a fair testing.

Yes actualy. One less click or shot pause can make all the difference.

If you had to use the hated car analogy think of it as simply replacing a few needlessly nasty stock parts on an otherwise excelent chassis and giving it a good remap.

But why get so heated? Its only an OS... or you could go Mac and do no wrong. :p
