Here are some pics of my new car (bends over awaiting roasting for buying new Golf)

No worries with people slagging off my purchasing decision, I expected nothing less. And I repeat that the tax / insurance aspect was not a reason for buying the car, just a nice bonus.

Financially let's just say there's plenty of money in the pot for a kid or two. We've been DINKs for a few years on healthy incomes.

Von Luck - it's a supercharged and turbocharged engine, and I personally find it very smooth and refined with more than enough power for my purposes. Some people that on principle will only sit in 3.0 L V6s or V8s may find it less acceptable but it suits us perfectly. We're both delighted with it and it certainly drives larger than the 1.4 litres suggest that it might.

Anyway thanks for the comments all.

Just seen that you can get a Superchip Bluefin for this car which offers a remap which increases the BHP and Torque to 36BHP and 66NM/49Lb-Ft respectively

Offering nearly 200BHP and 306NM Torque from a 1.4 :D

http://www.superchips.co.uk

Something to maybe consider when the warranty is up to unlock a bit more of that power out?

SEVENTEEN GRAND for a depreciation rocket ship!
Ignoring the other car choices I guess you have ended up with a smart (albeit rather bland looking) brand spanker of a Golf with paddles, good Horses to.

You know we need more people like you to keep propping the economy up, the sort who will happily lavish their savings on nice shiny new things. :D

In all honesty, a very good choice of car with a nice image and kudos attached to it which if you are in the right circles and social demographic etc is a cut above the ford focus, astra, leon etc. This is an important factor when buying a car like this and something my colleagues and piers appreciate as it is a status that cannot be represented by buying a formerly expensive car cheaply.

At least you won’t feel out of place when parked next to the other premium brands like Audis, BMWs and Jags etc.

I'm sorry, it is a nice car granted but their is nothing prestigious about a golf.

If you saw an 09 Golf next to a 06 BMW / Audi you would still think the latter are better. (Tbh I wouldn't say BMW or Audi are prestigious either)

To be fair, I'm in support of this view. Whilst it is absolutely not the car I would have spent £17k on, to be in a position to spend £17k on a car in cash is something the majority or 'rubbishers' on these forums could only dream of.

It does seem like the motors forum becomes a bit 'WHATCAR? magazine' with every thread boiling down to the £££ of a purchase as opposed to the heart & soul of the car etc.
Not that a Germanic Golf is hearty or souly!

This is the point, it is one thing to own a nice car or a few year old top spec merc or bmw but it is another to have the salary and professional position to go with it.

Buying a second hand former 40k car when you earn 10-15k a year is not the same as buying a new 20k car where you earn 40k per year etc.

To spend 17k cash on a Golf is a sensible choice for someone with enough money to comfortably do this and is as much of a lifestyle choice as if he had bought a 30k bmw.

As for image, VW most certainly do hold an image which is a cut above seat, vauxhall and fords etc, irrespective of whether the aforementioned may be a ST, VXR etc. Strange as it is, it is there, oh the joys of the middle classes.

Haha! :)
Save like mad when the UK is prosperous, spend like a beauty when the economy is wounded!

I have to agree with this, I've seen so many times on here where the VW brand has been sneered at for not being prestigious, when in fact a quick straw poll of colleagues or family members would suggest otherwise.

Not everyone wants to drive around looking like a c0ck or some sort of flashy nouveau riche wannabee. If you gave me a choice between a silver C class, or a silver Mk6 GT/Gti, I'd take the latter.

Ultimately he needed a 5 door hatchback which was relatively nippy and petrol over diesel which returned good ecconomy. He had saved up the money for a new car, which he got. I don't really see the problem - then again he did make a post on a public forum. Sure WE could and would have maybe bought other cars, but he got the EXACT car he wanted. Sure it's a lot of money, and certainly I'd have bought something else, but I don't have a kid on the way, and I don't fancy a new car. At least he has the piece of mind on warranty too. It's ecconomical, relatively fast, good looking, comfortable hatchback which fits his specs 100% - plus it's new, so it's all his to bed in and will no doubt last him a significant period of time. Just because we don't approve of his spending habits, doesn't make his choice wrong or foolish. At least he didn't buy it on credit or dig himself into debt - so good on you, I wish more people were sensible like this.

Enjoy your new purchase mate. :)

There are few BMWs or Audis that i'd take over this tbh.

Controversial I know. :p

Have you seen the Audi a3 1.4tsi? It is exactly the same car as his bur with an audi shell, which gives premium ergenomics over the golf, so in effect, you're saying you wouldn't drive the golf either?

The new Golf is better than the current A3 inside (from a feel aesthetic POV), and the Golf has a better ride.Someone mentioned the trim level above, this is not 'one below' the GTI, its the old highline model rebadged. In the MK5 the GT was one below the GTI, but not this time.

yes fox, because everybody who doesn't own a bmw or audi is in some way inferior to those have? Id rather a vw over a bmw, but id rather have an audi over a vw, just my preference. Some of the recommendations given here make me laugh. But i think you have brought a nice car, with good build quality, cheap enough service/running cost and the most important factor for urselfs, practical!

How obvious do you want to make it that you've obviously never driven any BMW or Audi?

This comment confuses me greatly.

As does this one, I don't think he was suggesting that at all.

That is almost screaming anti badge snobbery to me. There is no denying that BMW make fantastic cars, and to say you wouldn't own one is purely because of the badge and not the actual product itself. Would you drive it if it was made by Audi? Or Saab even? Ford? I drive an Audi and I certainly wouldn't say no to a current e90 BMW, they are nice looking, have great interiors, proven strong engines, what's not to like about them?

Congrats on the new car mate :) Personally i dont like the 5 door anywhere near as much as the 3 door, but understand your need for practicality. I have to say the MK6 golf is my favourite hatchback at the minute, the interior is excellent and it drives better than an A3. As for spending 17k on a brand new golf, well done! Dont listen to all the boring depreciation warriors, its people like you who keep the car industry alive so in years to come they can buy your sloppy seconds ;) Enjoy the car.
