Bonsai Trees

Thanks. It does need repotting, but I read it should be done either spring or autumn is this correct? Not really sure what to pot it into either, and what type of soil etc. Will have to do some research.

Ideally it should be done in Spring although it can be done in Autumn if it really needs it. As for soil, I have always used the bog standard multi-purpose mix from Green Dragon Bonsai - I haven't had that much success using their more expensive mixes so I've stuck with what I know :)

Arrived today :D

I bought one from Ikea and I think its dead, I watered it every couple of days but there is a big split down the trunk! I hope the little blighter pulls through.

Mine died 2 weeks ago :-( if some one knows why do tell me, its leaves just started curling inward and became like lil shriveld things but still very green.
I kept it well waterd and used the food :-(

Lol, this thread is full of tree killers. :p

despotofmidnor, maybe you over watered it. Mine looked nearly dead a week ago, but I only water it every two days now and it's perked up.

DAMN! maybe i loved it to death! too much water you say...maybe i shall leave it to dry its self out. :confused:

Here's my wee bonsai in my conservatory, makes a nice centre piece to the room, been working on this conservatory for 3-4 weeks now, getting there slowly :)

Looks good. I like the mound of soil around the base.

Arg, help me please. Ok, may have overdone it on the pruning, then there was a hot day and the leaves turned brown and dried out and kept continuing to turn brown despite the soil being moist.

It's now gone from this;

To this;

:(

Any ideas to save the poor thing?

I've killed one.

I'd like one, especially which maybe has little flowers too, but don't trust myself with one...

What sort of room temp do these things need?

Would quite like one but my room gets pretty toasty with PS3 and PC running.

Bonsai trees are still trees, some say they should be kept outdoors, like real trees and like real trees, they lose leaves in the winter when its cold. There are a ton of reading online and even though I have read them, i have killed 2 of the little thing.

Here's my Ficus Retusa Fig Tree. I've had him nearly a year now and he's growing fast! It's nearly time to change the pot. On the left is the Bonsai Tree food I use.

Bonsai trees stay small because of the size of the pot it is in, trees grows proportional to the root size. If you put it in a bigger pot, you will get a bigger tree, and then it won't be "bonsai" anymore.

Raymond, what you said is wrong. Perhaps that's why two of your trees have died.
In fact, instead of telling, I'll quote:

Bonsai Basics by Aura Garden Guides said:
All trees need to be able to extend their roots annually. If a a bonsai is overdue for repotting, the pot itself will be jam-packed with roots. With no room to extend, and the poor drainage and aeration that pot-bound roots create, the root system will deteriorate. Decay will settle in, living roots will begin to rot, the soil will become sour and full of pathogens, and the tree will eventually die.

What the quote and I am getting at is regardless of the root length, the tree size will relatively remain the same. Sorry if this post came across as condescending, it really isn't. :)
