MP's want £25 a day for food?

Despite what people might think, there have been changes made to the way that MPs handle their expenses - the press simply turns a blind eye to it.

I was under the impression that there was a similar sentiment about expenses being seen to be justifiable if seen by members of the public/their constituents in the previous guidelines?

No, there was previously a 'strict rules' approach to MPs expenses. In other words, 'you may not do A, you may not do B and you may not do C'. Naturally, we don't have enough letters in the Alphabet or even enough numbers to list every single deed an MP might commit that the public might find unconscionable.
MPs were 'side-stepping' the rules. For example (abeilt a crude one), if there was a rule that explicitly said 'you may not enter the castle to take the gold', an MP would send somebody else to get the gold. Technically, no rule would be broken.

To avoid this, a 'broad principles' approach has been utilised, based on the seven principles of public life which were coined in the early 1990s after the scandals of the Conservative government. Now, the rules are not as specific so they cannot be sidestepped. Going by the previous example, the new rule would be 'no MP may in any way use the gold for any benefit that the gold was not intended for'.

This is a much better way of doing things, and was the reason why many MPs stopped claiming second home allowances in January when the new rules were announced, despite not coming into force until this summer.

WTF... £25 a day is way to much

£25 a day for 5days a week - £125
£500 a month
£26,000 a year...

I don't see why they are entitled to have their food paid for for them.

Doctors, nurses, firemen, police, etc all pay for their on meals, why are MP's any different?

we typically spend £75/week on food but that's between 4 adults (and 2 cats). We eat well enough.

£25 a day when away from home isn't that much really..

it's hard to find somewhere half decent to eat 3 times a day for £25.
