Michael Schumacher will make a shock return to Formula 1 to replace injured Ferrari driver Felipe Massa, news agencies are reporting.

The seven-time world champion retired at the end of 2006 but has agreed to drive at the European Grand Prix.

Massa fractured his skull in Hungarian GP qualifying and may be out for the rest of the year.

Schumacher has been a team advisor but on 23 August will race an F1 car for the first time since April 2008.

More to follow.

"Ferrari intends to entrust Michael Schumacher with Felipe Massa's car for as long as the Brazilian driver is not able to race," a Ferrari statement said.

"Michael Schumacher has shown his willingness and in the next few days he will undergo a specific programme of preparation at the end of which it will be possible to confirm his participation in the championship starting with the European Grand prix on Aug. 23."

I am in a state of total shock.

Received my Brawn Fusion Jacket today by the DURRL man as well, fantastic day, makes the rain seem to disappear :D

Such a massive PR win for FOM, Ferrari, everyone. I'd bet this will be the most watched race this season.

Looking forward to it.

I think it will be more interesting to see how the boring Finish gimp reacts, he might smile and maybe even speak.

I'll be interested to see how Ferrari react if he stops being so lazy, puts some effort in and actually beats Schumacher.

Im just not so sure that he is going to perform anywhere near what is expected of him. Remember he has been out since 2006 :)

Im eating my words right now. Total shock that the greatest living F1 driver in the World is coming back to entertain us again...wohoooot!!
