£500 car challenge! Woooooo!

Another vote for the family barge here. More comfort than you'll get in a 1.1L car too and you won't need to rev the nuts off it to get anywhere.

If you go french diesel as suggested above somewhere, try for a larger car than a 106 say a 306/406. Don't get the n/a diesel as it is woefully slow (however economical) - insurance on 306 diesels is generally good especially the TD. The Dturbo (the actual trim level, not just TD) commands a slighly higher premium (not much though).

If you went for a petrol, and were in a very good postcode the 1.8 is only IG6 i think ?!?! , if not then the 1.6 is IG5 and about the biggest a new driver could insure whilst not being to darn slow :)

I wouldn't bother trying to look at specific Make/Models of cars, at this price point you want whatever you can get in the best possible condition. I ended up with a Ford Escort and it worked out cheaper than a tin box with a tiny engine.

Don't get a 1.4 Rover 200, the 16v is over 100bhp and insurance will be horrific. Damn quick for what they are though :D

1.1 8v for the win :)
I learnt to drive in a 214, and still drive it now as my first car. Insurance isn't that much more than it was for any other car :).

Diesel 406, surely you can get some in this price range? If not then ask grandad what he drives and buy one of those.

Classic car now, that :) Not many idiot chavs driving around the town centre crashing into things in them any more.

Unlike the Corsa.

MARK 3 ASTRA!!!

Mine was exactly £500.

And despite what you may hear from the Vauxhall haters in this forum, it really isn't a bad car.

1.4 litre engine, and it cost £750 to insure for a 22 y.o. with 0 NCB.

Peugeot 306 1.9D or turbo diesel. Ford Mondeo 1.8TD. Ford Ka. Anything with a volvo badge.

I had a Saab 900 Turbo when i was 18 with 1ncb and it was cheaper to insure than the 1.1 fiesta it replaced. That's going back some years though now.

Older fiestas are good cars, for that matter. Avoid anything with a "fast car" badge like GTi, RS, etc

Dunno about the insurance now but E30 BMW 325i estate was cheap when i had one (again, years ago),they're AWESOME cars. luxurious, reliable, and a superb motorway stormer. Loads of space in the back for girls and beers etc, fairly simple to keep running, and you can get parts.

I happily insured a 1.8 petrol 306 as my first car with 0 ncb and then a 1.8TD mondeo.

The pug was one of the most unreliable things i've owned, go for a mondeo
