I was mugged

Is Hoxton (near Old Street) a good area of London? I'm moving there for a year in September, and this thread doesn't fill me with confidence :p

well its east london. a lot of gangs particularly near whitechapel a lot of asians youths

good areas in london, are mostly in west london. fulham, earls court, olympia, ealing, barnes, putney

these areas aint that particular expensive. compared to the high class ones in central or for example chelsea which is just around the corner from fulham literally, and houses prices triple

We need Singapore-style public caning and whipping in this country.

Oh wait. Muggers have "rights". *BARF*

Im glad to hear you are ok mate.

u should have reported it straight away to be honest. the police would have came and driven you about to see if you could spot them

regarding crime figures and reporting it that is all nonsense. well in london, my mate has told me that they sometimes put black, asians or arabs down as white, because the proportion of white to black is uneven, so they have to window dress the figures

Yeah, that sounds like crap.

Np idea. but you can use http://www.upmystreet.com

type in post code or area, then browse to My area and select crime levels or what ever else you want to know.

Depends, Hoxton/Old Street is close enough to the City to have some quite nice areas - full of tedious merchant banker/hedge fund types though. OTOH parts of it are a complete dump too, it is the East End after all. It's London though, you are never completely safe but it's safer than most other big British cities.

Glad your okay eyyaz, a thing like that can rearly shake you up. I just hope they try to mug the "wrong" person next time and get beaten or knifed themselves.

well this is london mate. your gonna have to get used to it. take up some self defence classes

buy some pepper spray (u can still get a hold of it). or buy a large dog

dont get pepper spray. it's ilegal and possession can be punishable under section 5 of the 1968 firearms act.
so if you're caught in posession it can end badly

If someone stopped to ask me something when I was in and around the Manor House area, I'd have bricked it :p.

Too true, used to live there and only got mugged once. I felt priveleged.

To the OP: I'm sorry you got mugged, it's not a nice feeling. But ultimately your priorities are to be streetwise (the area is covered by CCTV if not immediately then surrounding roads) and report it immediately (you had your mobile) and hope the police can respond quickly. If not, then cancel you credit cards and just be thankful you live another day.

loool. u think them figures really mean something. as i have mentioned they are utter bull****. there was even a program on bbc recently exposing them a 3 part series.

and the thread is evident it self the OP didnt report the crime. so loads of crime go unmentioned. how is a website going to tell me the level of crime in my area, when i know too well how much happens when and where. im only 21 but, i am fortunate enough to know a lot of youth in my age group. hence why nothing has happened. but this stupid hoodrat culture where u are caught slipping in different areas codes or because u look different or dress like a grunger is just ridicilous

for example holland park. do u know how many emo, grungers get robbed for their ipods, phones and gadgets there. yet their is know police or community support officer in the areas.

my suggestion is take up a self defence like "krava maga" or "boxing"

and start to socialise with people in the area, so they know your from the so called "endz" as they put it

They are still a very good guide.

as reporting will be averaged out as well. so you can still compare one area to the other. Also those stats do not discern one race fro another.

why surprised?

Bristol is fairly crime ridden. Lots of druggies and lots of bad areas.

To be fair, if a group of thugs came up to you, most people (myself included) unless you could peg it no matter how much "marshal arts" you know; you would give in to their demands. If they started to "rough me up" in spite of me being cooperative I probably would retaliate with as much force as I can muster - if I'm going down, I might as well take a few with me.

This is one of those times where having phone insurance sounds like a good idea, you can get it for under a fiver a month and as long as you keep your phone backed up you will loose nothing if you just hand it over.
Shouldnt have to but these are the crap times we live in

I am looking into Krava Maga right now. Other then that i do have a lot of friends who are hench (some who do kickboxing) and i was supposedly meeting up with some of them before i got into inccident
