sexting

To be honest I dont know how someone could be so dumb

I would treat this with the ye olde email rule

"Would you put someone in an email/text that you would not put on a postcard"

You dont have control of where the pic /vid goes after you send it on , so why do it ?

I spent most of my school life afraid. I know I wasn't the only one either. And yes, I contemplated taking my life to end it. At the time it seemed like I had very few options! I'm older now and see how that was not a solution, but I try to imagine how much worse it might have been if pictures of me nude had been spread around the school...

I don't know how old you are, or how your school life was, maybe you never had to feel this - which is great. But bullying ruins lives.

My friend, nearly every teenager considers suicide because teenagers have so many reasons to 'hate' their lives and they are emotionally unstable. I considered it too. I was bullied at school, I even had my hair set on fire [no, really!] and I have a permanent scar where my head was bashed into a wall. At the end of the day it comes down to how strong you are as an individual and how you can personally handle what's happening to you.

yowch!

Perhaps, but its hard to tell that to the parents. "It's up to your daughter to stand up to these 300+ people with the naked pics of her".

If we can educate the kids to show a little sense and not make the pics, then maybe that could help some kid not face bullying, and not be depressed. *shrug*I don't think it can hurt anyway!

I agree, it can't hurt. But if there's one thing that teenagers are, it's sexual, and technology is just giving teenagers more and more means of expressing their sexuality. I don't think we can repress 'sexting' anymore than we can repress hormones.

What I can't understand is, its legal to have sex at 16, but not send/receive "sexts" or watch porn until you're 18.

So does that mean that if you film yourself having sex at 16, you're not allowed to watch it back? :o

I imagine filming the act in the first place would be illegal so yes, to answer your question.

Totally daft, I know.

May have this wrong - but I thought the porn rule was all-encompassing. That is, yes you're not allowed to watch it until you're 18, but more importantly the rule's there to prevent those under 18 from "starring" in one (giggidy).

As a precaution, everyone should be put on the sex offender's register and have to apply to be taken off it if they feel they have adequate grounds.

I lol'd

As for the girl that sent nekkid pics of herself to her BF, got bullied and then committed suicide, that's 2 fails on her part, and changing a law isn't going to stop it happening.

Bullying is the issue that needs dealing with first and foremost, because there are thousands of victims out there who DON'T send nekkid pics of themselves.

Asking teens not to send nekkid pics of themselves to their gf/bf is like saying no underage sex... It aint gonna stop!

What caught my eye was "Although it is legal to have sex at 16 under British law, it is illegal to take, hold or share "indecent" photos of anyone under 18". I wonder how many people are aware of this ?

MW

Absoloutely everyone? Not being funny but I've never met anyone who didn't know this.

Any bullying is a potential cause of suicide, and sexting is just another avenue to severe bullying. Young teenagers are much more sensitive to this, and often don't say anything, or nothing is done about it.

Were you ever bullied? I was. No matter who I told it carried on. I was ridiculed daily and threatened often. There were a few assaults including being shot in the face by a BB gun.

Having been also bullied for >10 years of school life I concur.:(

*raises hand*

I have a shed load of pic's of ex girlfriends :(

Bullying is a serious problem. I work with children, of all ages, and I help them with their problems, Bullying is a serious problem that often comes up.

Sending rude messages to people, that's the individuals motivation. Do people plan on monitoring every text message sent from someone who is under 18 in this country ? good luck.

If you let someone take pics of you naked, then on your own head be it. You better be sure that you can trust them.

There's already laws and rules for bullying and harassment. We don't need more laws just because technology has changed the vectors.

It is odd that there is the disparity between the age of consent and the age at which you can be photographed naked. The laws make some sense in isolation, as the decision to accept money to show off your body does require quite a degree of maturity. It's just difficult when the march of technology has brought the two closer together and blurred the lines now that more teens have digital cameras and camera phones.

Still, in my day I used a polaroid camera to take pics of my 17 year old girlfriend, then made sure to return the pics when we split up. I'd also have expected to get a kicking if I'd circulated the pics, and rightly so.
