sexting

I'm amazed at the girl being interviewed on the radio last night. The story was reported that she had sent topless pics to her boyfriend who after they had split up, sent them to everybody else at her school.

In her interview she said "I sent them to him to persuade him to get back with me as he promised he would"

How gullible can somebody be?

What caught my eye was "Although it is legal to have sex at 16 under British law, it is illegal to take, hold or share "indecent" photos of anyone under 18". I wonder how many people are aware of this ?

Surely anyone with a remote grasp of child pornography laws? IE, pretty much everyone?

Sexting is a really, really stupid word.

The problem is that it's illegal, and the kids are sharing the pictures around, using them to bully people, and posting them to the internet which can have drastic consequences for the people involved.

The thing is though, it may not be.

Some girl taking a photo of herself topless, or in a bra (just standing topless, no sexual poses etc) should not be classed as indecent, and so not illegal. I would suggest that style probably makes up the vast majority of photos sent in "sexts".

As for your bullying point, I was also bullied massively at school, and tbh they will pick on anything, so if it wasn't naked photos it would bewhat she was wearing, or how she spoke, smelled, had her hair, friends.... It may have been a contributing factor, but I doubt if those photos hadn't existed she wouldn't have killed herself.

EDIT: This again leads to needing a far more liberal stance on nudity. If (like most of europe) nudity is just that, and can easily be seperated from sex, people aren't going to be as worried about this kind of image.

What? A child in a topless pic not indecent?!

No, indecent implies a sexual element, just standing topless is not sexual (and is generally upheld in law too), this applies to either children or adults, why you can have topless women in The Sun and why photos of naked kids playing on a beach or a photo of your child playing in a bath is not classed as indecent as they show no sexual content.

However it probably would depend on the context as well. If said image was in a collection of more explicit images (for example a photo of a girl naked with her legs spread IS indecent) then it would probably also be classed as indecent due to it's surrounding.

Hmmm ill probs get shot for this but personally i don't think kids under the age of 18 should have a phone anyway. I think the law are concerned with pedo's more than anything in this case.

Under 18? Most people between the age of 16 and 18 have jobs, and over 17 drive a car.:p

I do agree however that there is no real need for younger people to have a phone, but would peg it as under 13ish. However phones are becoming like computers, where we "need" them, and so I can sort of see why kids have them.

So you'd rather your kid be out, without any way of contacting them? I've had a phone since about 13 and a number of times it has been fairly critical!

How did we used to cope in the old days before mobile phones

I haven't read the thread but no wonder this texting of nudity is on the rise, Vanessa 'teen role model' Hudgens just had a new set of nude photos leaked. I'm sure you'll find related articles and imagery for those who wish to search. Try thesuperficial.

i had a cracking pair of boobs sent to me a couple of days ago, apparently from one of the women on my facebook profile. i don't believe they are hers though and she wont send another with her face in shot (due to being worried about them being sent on or being uploaded).
Now, just to clear up, she sent them to the wrong person and since receiving i have taken my number off of my account!

what do you think the "vast majority" of teens are sending nude pictures to each other for then, if not for naughtiness ?

What? Are you saying that you previously wasn't aware that you shouldn't have indecent photos of children until you read that?

Surely anyone with a remote grasp of child pornography laws? IE, pretty much everyone?

I wasn't aware that the legal age for indecent photos was 18 especially as the age of consent is 16

Saying that I do believe I received such indecent photos by someone who couldn't have been 18 at the time. Am i going to jail ? :(
