First Time Build Log

Perhaps you're thinking of triple channel which only i7s use, whereas AMD setups only use Dual Channel (for now)?..
As was said above, AM3 motherboards are all about DDR3 :)

So what's the difference between an AM2+ board and an AM3 board with DDR2 memory slots, because i've seen a few of those kicking about.

Haven't a clue mate, all i know is that this is DDR3 only.

The system is all up and running now btw guys. Had a few probs during the build but managed to sort them out.

Only things now,
Fan(s) are a bit loud, might buy some 'silent' ones, although i think it might be the GPU fan mostly.
The CPU idles at about 36, which sounds a bit high ish, but have read the 955 does run quite hot so not too worried.

The dell monitor is great by the way, would definitely recommend.

Yeah i might have a look, are they easy to fit + do they fit universally across all GPUs?

It depends on the card and the cooler, they aren't exactly easy to fit, you have to think about it, but they're not all hair-tearing-outly hard. They don't all universally fit all GPUs, look at the description to see if it fits. If it's not there, do a quick search of the name of the cooler and the name of the card, should give you a good idea.

Think the thermal compound needs time to bed in, e.g. 200 hours.

Have you had a play around with fan speed settings in the BIOS?

Where did you see those? AM3 uses DDR3 exclusively.

Phenom II & Athlon II (in-built) memory controller works with both DDR2 & DDR3 memory sticks i.e. on a AM2+ or AM3 motherboard. But still runs in Dual-Channel i.e. 2x1GB, 2x2GB, etc

It is the total heatsink/fan replacement ones that are a pain if the gfx card makers want to be sods about it. I remember way back replacing the heatsink (or not) on a radion 9800 where they had glued the thing on with epoxy :D

Alright you lucky people, here are a couple of pictures.
Please excuse the quality, phone cam.

Heres the set-up, love the monitor:

Inside 1: (Btw i know the fenrir isn't pointing the ideal way. Will hopefully change.

Inside 2: Notice the stupid wire configuration i had to use to power the GPU, need to get that sorted.

£3.99 'exhaust fan', pumps out a fair bit of air:

Need to do a bit more cable tidying. Also going to replace stock fans with ultra quiet + new GPU cooler, as my current is fairly loud. Might rotate the fenrir, and also engage in a bit of overclocking :) For a first time build though, it (almost) went like clockwork, happy days.

That cable management is, to put it bluntly, ****. But yeah, nice job. The Fenir is probably okay that way, since the PSU fan will be taking it away instead of the rear case fan, but that will increase the PSU temp so yeah, move it when you get the chance.

I know I know, its **** poor. I shall make it better honest :)
