Strong smell

I came down the stairs at about 12am and the whole downstairs of the house stank of white spirit/ shoe polish, but at the time I assumed my mum had polished her shoes before bed.

This morning the smell is weaker but I found out that no polishing has been done so the source of the smell is a mystery.

Any ideas on what could cause a smell like this?
