microsoft - MSDN and Partner Program

Morning all,

Could someone in the know explain what the difference is between these two please??

We (at work) have a MSDN subscription and have just been upgraded to a Gold Partner.

I'm trying to get a copy of exchange and server 2003 to run internally but I'm unsure which route to go down.

I'm under the impression the if I where to get software and keys from MSDN I'd have to declare them to Microsoft and they would bill us but if I got them via the partner program I can get them for free (much less choice of software however)

Is this right??

Blastman, will you be using the software in a production environment or will it just be for testing purposes? I have an MSDN and TechNet subscription and as far as I'm aware, software downloaded from either service can't be used for production uses.

If you want the software for production use, I would approach your reseller (if you have one) as this will most likely be cheaper than going directly to Microsoft.

If I wanted to use any of the software available through MSDN/TechNet in a production capacity, we would approach our reseller, who we have a Select agreement with, they would invoice us, and then we would use a volume licence key to activate the software.

Thats the info I was after.

We intend to use the licenses for internal use so I'll have to get them via the partner programme in stead of the easier to get MSDN licenses.

As you are a Gold partner, you get a certain number of licenses for internal use, Exchange is included (Enterprise) and up to 500 CAL's (100 by default).

You'll need to sign in here to get keys and media:

is it just me or can anyone else not get into the mebership centre at the mo, keep getting 404 errors. :(
 
We have a subscription at work (I have access to all operating systems / dev environments but not the team ones / sql server etc) and have installed the operating system on my works pc and my home pc (I often work from home). Is this legit... guy at work says it is, but he doesn't seem totally clued up!

Also on the key pages, there is a VLK and RTL (I assume the former is volume licence and the latter is retail)... which one should, if any, be using? Cheers :)

No - you should be using the downloads in a test environment only.
MSDN/Technet is not a way of getting free licenses.
It's a way of being able to create vast test environments without the need to splash out on licenses before you have time to test everything.

But if you are (like I am) a Gold partner, you are allowed licenses for internal use.

Whether this internal use extends to home PC's is a tricky question and will depend upon each company and who in Microsoft you speak to that day (yes, it's that bad!).

No, I don't thinks that right.


You have to get the licenses that you want to use internaly from the partner membership center.

As said above the MSDN/TECH NET are not for internal use outside of testing/Dev environments.

Sorry, think we're crossing wires and I agree with you, I was just pointing out that if you are a partner, you will have access to licenses you can use internally, not just in dev/test.
 
Can soneone explain how many exchange 2007 servers and seats I can use via the partner program??

We're a gold partner.

I've read loads on thier site but there seems to be serveral answers.

As I mentioned above, 1 Exchange 2007 Enterprise and 100 CAL's are allowed for internal use if you are a gold partner.

as initial yes, but it also said that the maximum is 7. how do we go about getting more?

I'm really after 5 servers for about 400 people.

MSDN Subscription licenses can be used in production and any other non-test environment as long as it is owned by your company.

Action Pack licenses are for internal use (by the company that owns them) only.

Technet licenses are for testing only.

Sorry, just to confrim...

We can use the MDSN licenses to up the amount to server licenses as long as the MSDN subscription is owned by the company??

If thats right, how many can we use?

I can get one from the partner program but I need another 4. Is that too many to get from the MSDN subscription?

Sorry for all the question but the partner website really isn't clear.
