Im thinking of getting a PSP for my son for Crimbo and he will be nearly 8 at the time. He loves his DS and is kind of getting the hang of the consoles in the house so im thinking the PSP would be a nice gift. But will the extra money on the PSP Go justified ?

The retails price seems a bit too steep and I am thinking for the same price I could get him a real good 3000 bundle nearer the time with some games.

Must admit, the Go looks like a better size. I've had a full size chunky one since launch and while I have taken it when I've travelled places, I've left it at home a lot as well, mainly due to the size. Your boy is only 8 though.
The go does look a bit uncomfortable to me, I'd be wary of hand cramps and stuff but maybe smaller hands will suit it better

According to all the hands on reviews from E3 that i've read, the Go was in fact more comfortable to hold than its predecessors, not that that's difficult.

For an 8 year old I would base it on which one is likely to break less when dropped. (Having said that I don't now which model would be better for this).

one thing to consider. Most DS games are light-hearted pick up and play games that anyone can play. a lot of PSP games are full-on console games with plenty of content that has to be learnt to play the game. You would have to choose your games carefully for an 8 year old.

PSP go and PSP for that is having an Iphone type app store coming about te same time as release with games Software priced close to app store prices. PSP dev kits are now £1000/$1500 so that may help some smaller dev teams afford to make iphone type games and apps with a smallish outlay.

What's going to be easier for him to get games on though? With the PSP it's just remove one UMD, insert another, but with the Go it'll have to be set-up with internet access and you'll have to purchase the games through the online store for him. Plus you're missing out on pre-owned game prices.

His kid is gonna get beaten up at schopl if he walks in with some phat PSP 1000 or 2000 though. Kids can be mean at that age. The extra upfront cost of PSP GO! will save on medical bills for the kid, in the long run.

Assuming all his friends have the Go... It's not like its the hot new thing, it's crap.

Still not sure whats crap about the go? Its screen is slightly smaller by a about 1CM but its brighter doesnt have the ghosting of the 3000, its smaller, lighter has improved controls and is far more portable when closed up than the old PSP. It has built in BT so you can use BT headsets, sync to a tethered phone for online stuff, and linked to a PS3 far easier.
I would think loadng 10-20 games on the UMD drive would be far easier for someone to play games on, no need to carry a bunch games round with you, no danger of loosing or damaging the UMD or even the boxes, just select which game and play. If you havent got a PSP then a PSP go makes a good purchase, if you have a PSP with loads of games and accessories not quite so good as the accessories wont work and the UMD trade in is yet unkown. The price is still the stumbling block, but it looks like £200 will be the selling price.
Still think some of the "hate" on the Go is nasty pirates not liking the idea that they cant seem to be able to crack them so easy, a lot of the homebrew apps sounds like they could come to the PSP app store so those who only use it for the apps cracking gives you (never to play illegal games on) will still have a way to use them.

Agreed on all points.

Personally I don't hate the PsP Go. But I do dislike it. I mean I own a 1000 PHAT PSP. I'm happy with that it does just about everything the PsP go does with the exception that it will not have a HDD in it.

I just dont see the point in trading or selling my current psp for what 40-50quid if im lucky to then splash out another 150 odd quid for a console thats a bit smaller and well does everything my psp already does. I just dont see the point.

just my 2 cents though. My opinion is by no means a "pirates" point of view either btw b4 you start on that gravy train.
