Republicans: NHS is "Owellian and Evil"

How delightfully simplistic. Ever been to Denmark or Sweden?

They dont have the history Britain has plus they are a lot smaller. Combined about 4 times smaller than the UK.

Obviously you cant sum up a political ideology in one sentence like that, but history and indeed the present shows that it applies to the majority.

The NHS is one of the things I love about this country, they did help me to no mans end, and I think it is fantastic. Be a very sad day if it goes.

while the NHS isn't perfect I would quite happily give the man who ends it in favour of a US style system a hell of a kicking in.

I have relied on the NHS for medicine to keep me alive since the day i was born-

0-18 cost me nothing
currently- costs me about a tenner a month, while i have job, nothing if i don't.
65- back to nothing.

i am happy with that.

iam happy with the fact that if something did happen neither myself or my family would have to worry about a man from the insurance company interfering or saying that iam simply not covered.

while there are issues its probably the best idea this country has come up with.

The best thing about the US system is that they already spend more public money per head on it than any other developed nation. That's right, folks, the US has the most publically funded healthcare in the world.

I don't mind the NHS, if it was to become private it would take a long time to get back upto where it is now I imagine, when lives are at stake I am not sure it is worth the risk.

There would have to be legislation making insurance as simple as possible and it would have to cover everything. I don't like the idea of people gambling on if they will get Cancer or not.

It would probably also have to be free for children and the unemployed.

So in the end it is probably easier to leave it alone but try and cut out some of the waste.

No system will ever be perfect, especially one that has to be so big. I think the NHS is a fantastic service and has looked after millions of people who may never have had that access to medical care without it.

I have nothing but praise for the NHS. I've been admitted to hospital a few times and couldn't complain at the service, and I have one of the best GPs around.
I couldn't bear living with a healthcare system like in the US. The idea of entrusting my life and wellbeing to an insurance company just seems like madness to me.

The NHS is a fantastic idea, unfortunately in recent times it has become overloaded with non clinical staff with a focus on budgets.

There's a huge amount of deadwood in the NHS, but frankly most people working in it want to help patients either directly or indirectly. I took an enormous pay cut to work for the NHS in one of the many health board I.T. departments. Best job I've ever had as I can actually see the systems I've helped develop and roll out easing the workload of doctors and nurses. There's loads of systems which have been created by ex-clinicians that don't actually help though.. :p

I dont agree with socialism, why should we be paying for all the people who dont take care of their bodies and drink litres of god-knows-what every weekend? if not every night?

Im not saying the US has the best system, but i know the NHS isnt either... i think a lot of people just stick up for it out of blind patriotism.

i believe there are better systems than the NHS, and that the US should look at those before hand... although we all know they wont - because a socialist health care system means mega bucks for the pharmaceutical companies, and there for the government.

You're aware that people who drink and smoke pay a lot of extra taxes. right?

in the case of smokers they pay for their healthcare and a massive profit to the government.

A Universal healthcare system available to everyone in their time of need is hardly hardcore left wing socialism in practice.

The NHS is not perfect but it’s common sense to have one where everyone no matter your earnings can get treatment for their medical problems, self-inflicted or not.
