Na, said what I meant. When the 4850 came out, it was on par with the 9800GTX, nvidia didn't like this (because the 9800GTX was selling for a lot more than the 4850) so they came up with the 9800GTX specifically to beat the 4850 - which it did (just).

As the 9800GTX was in the same generation of releases as the 9600GT, so the comparison is also easier to understand (ie the 9800GTX is a good bit faster than the 9600GT-by approx 30-40%).
 
What you said was false though as you said the 4850 is about as powerful as a 9800gtx which is not true its got the same power as a 9800gtx+. There are not to many new reviews around with the 4850 and 9800gtx+ but this one was at the top of the pile and from april. With no aa the 9800gtx+ wins most but with 4 x aa the 4850 wins more.

Any how i think i get what you were trying to say but the old 9800gtx is not as fast as a 4850 so the statement you made by saying the 4850 is about as fast as a 9800gtx is wrong because the 4850 is faster and on par with the 9800gtx+.
 
I just had a look at this review and I think our little argument has been made silly. In anything other than 1200p these three cards are VERY similar in performance, certainly too close to be able to see any difference in games. When compared to something like a 4870 or GTX 260, these difference pale into insignificance.

Bottom line: OP - get the 4850, it's a great card.
 
Don't rule out a second hand card either, the 8800 series cards are going really cheap these days and can run almost anything.
