Information on medicine

So my misses started her first real day as an F2 on Friday in the ICU department.

She started work at 8am and finished at midnight. Not bad for her first day lol

Man I'm loving F2, they've cut all our hours so there's loads of free time and loads of locums, I did 25 hours this weekend at locum rates, that made me more than I do in a week!

I do indeed, I start tomorrow and do some stupid split week of nights which boggles my mind. Even better I'm the most senior doctor in hospital and lead the arrest team, good times!

Couple of questions, as I'm still a bit in the dark about some things.

You do a 3 year undergraduate course, then a 4 year post grad course, correct?

After that, you do a 2 year foundation course? By this time, you're at youngest 27 years old, then you start work as a junior, until you're around 30 when you become a consultant?

Or have I got it completely wrong?

Thanks!

No
You got to Medical school after doing your A levels. This lasts 5 years or 6 years if you Also want a BSc also.

You then do your F1 and F2 year (working as a junior doctor).

Oh, thanks for clearing that up :), so you're a junior doctor at around 24, and from there, how many years until you become a consultant?

2 foundation years then usually a further 6-8 years until consultant level, though it often takes longer depending on speciality as there's usually a bottleneck in the number of posts usually around ST3, so you need to do a bit of research, buff your CV, pass your membership exams and that can add extra time.

It is, and you'll see your colleagues who aren't as bright from school and uni go on to earn more, have less resposibility and stress, work fewer hours and be better appreciated.

Wow, what a first week and a half. Some words to sum up how I've been feeling: miserable, angry, stressed, annoyed, hot, tired, confused, holy ****. But I've enjoyed (just about) every second. Oh and 48 hours? Bahahahahahahaha

Ive also just finished my first week and a half, mental is the best way to describe it :). if you want some more in depth advice on interview and stuff then just PM me and ill give you my MSN address. Doing well in your A-levels, a good UCAS application and being well prepared for the interview is the key, I was interviewing prospective students for my medical school last year so I know a few things that might help you.

It seems like a nice long slog then :)

And the light at the end of the tunnel is an oncoming train.

No seriously, "consultant"dom has changed significantly over the past few years, and is set to change even more in the next few. Regardless of the party in power. And its not going to be for the better.

Ignore at your own peril, but do make a mental note of this and you'll reflect on it in 10 years time.....
