It's been said (JanesyB I believe) that choosing a model of Passat is a bit like choosing which variety of wallpaper paste you'd rather eat.

Well I think I need one. I have a little one on the way and having done the rounds of the favourite Bavarian Motors, and others, I've found that the Passat has the best boot space, being deeper than the 5 series (and possibly wider), so it fits the pushchair we're having without it needing to go diagonal. It's also got all of the isofix gear that we need, whereas none of the e46s we viewed had.

So, which Passat is the one to look out for and which ones should be avoided. Is the 2.0FSI any good? With petrols being in very short supply, it ming end up being another derv, so should it be the 1.9 or 2.0 TDI?

I'm looking at the B6 (2005-onwards). Looking to spend upto £8k.

I'm sure I posted that, but it's probably a Clarksonism or similar as it came to mind too easily when I originally posted it for it to be original thought :p

Before chosing a Passat make sure you've exhuasted all alternative options. Have you looked at adoption?

If you still want one, then we'll send for merlin immediatly.

I now want to know what you've got in store for anyone who comes in here and says they're buying a Laguna.

EDIT: Just to say I had a Passat as a courtesy car for about 4 days. It was the dullest thing on earth. Seriously, less per personality then a tax accountant who collects vintage photo copiers.

Like many others, im not a big fan of the Passat, It dissapoints me dynamically. What disappoints me more is that people hold it up to be something that it isnt, it isnt a classy car or a car with kudos, its just a dull rep mobile, its a Vectra with fancy heater vents and slightly softer, soft touch dash materials.

Avensis or Mondeo hatch.Accord is also too expensive for what it is, and quite small.8k wont really buy a decent big Beemer.

One car to look out for would be a 2004 onwards E class, massive car, and from 2004 Merc actually made proper cars.

Surely nobody ever WANTS a Passat? I thought it was only people with no idea, or who were locked in a Passat warehouse and had to buy one to be allowed out that bought them?

Bit like Saw but the only way out is to sign a PCP agreement for a 1.9TDI Passat.

Have you looked at the new Mondeo?

Yes but it's outside the budget unfortunatly.

It's clear you don't care about cars.

Why not a Toyota Avensis.

A)They're just as boring and B)They're not as nice inside as the Passat and C)The boot isn't as deep.

I appreciate you're adding a suggestion, but is your first comment really neccesary?

The E Class isn't something I've looked into, but I will. Thanks. The Mk3 Mondeo would obviously be within budget, but I wouldn't spend £7-8k on one.

Then dont....?

Spend £3-4k on one and go on holiday with the change.

It's the main family car. We have a cheap second car. I know it's uninspiring to drive, but if we have a snoozemobile main family car, I should be able to get something a little more fun for the second car. The Passat is comfortable, it is a nice place to be and it does fit the practical requirements I have. I can't find any other car (except the E Class which I'll look into) that ticks all of the boxes. The answer isn't to halve the budget and ***** the rest.

I need to pick the best car I can out of the available trim and engine options and try to dodge any potential bullets with regards to must have features or problematic engines etc.

am i missing something? 1 kid on the way and you want to spend 8k on a passat?
or is there another reason why you must spend so much money and on saloon?
a hatchback would be much better option, or a touring/estate.

My Passat:

3rd day own owership battery fell out after an emergency stop.

That pretty much set the standard.

It rattled.

It was NOT comfortable.

The quality of materials wasn't.........quality.

It was noisy on startup, both neighbours commented and the one has a hearing aid.

It wasn't economical.

It exhibited immense understeer.

The brakes were ****e.

The steering was numb.

The handbrake was ***k.

The sun glass hatch broke.

the dash showed error lights I've never seen before and frankly couldn't be bothered to look up.

It burned oil.

It hurt two other cars and then inflated unnecessarily, I crashed it because driving it was like hearing a lullaby after 6 pints of strongbow.

It was repairable.

The CD's skipped over bumps.

The radio turned itself off randomly.

The driving position was ok only if you had skelletal issues.

It looked as boring inside as it did outside.

The seating fabric was nasty and wouldn't come up clean after an encounter with a 4 year old and a packet of yoghurt coated raisins.

Mine was the "S" and had wind up windows in the back. Classy.

Glad I could be of assistance. :)
