Does anyone else live next to a main road?

I've just moved to a very nice 1 bed flat in a Georgian house. Only problem with it so far is that my bedroom faces a main road. Even with the windows closed (not doubleglazed) the sound of cars is still pretty audible.

I was wondering if anyone has or ever had this experience? I guess will have to invest in some decent earplugs for sleep :P hopefully will get used to it?

Sends me to sleep with the whoooooooshhhhh, whoooooooshhhhh, whoooooooshhhhh noise o and the voooooooooooom from a van or lorrie :)

on a serious note you will get used to it! its like leaving a tv on to sleep too.

Used to live right in the centre of Bristol round the corner from the hospital. Used to get ambulances going past day and night.

You just get used to it really. I've now moved to somewhere that's dead silent at night and for the first few weeks I couldn't sleep without the noise.

used to live on a main road, right on an accident hotspot, nearly once a week, there'd be an accident outside, just get used to it

I used to live on a main road in a building that was directly between two pubs. You just get used to it, although mini cabs causing people to hang around outside was a bigger problem than general traffic noise.

Oh, there was also a pelecan crossing there, you noise was made worse by the sound of white vans and mopeds horsing away from the lights.

As I said, you get used to it.

Worse was not being able to open the windows when it got hot.

I like it, it's quite soothing when you're lying in bed at night, hearing the odd car here or there driving past.

Though my road isn't a city centre road, but one of the main road's leading out of my area.

Get double glazing, or ear plugs. You will get used to it soon. My bedroom is right next to our front room (ground floor flat) and my wall is like card. I can hear the tv and people talking, you just get used to it.

I have the exact same problem, moved into my flat in May this year and my bedroom over looks the main shopping steet so the noise can be a pest. Can't afford to get anything done about it but what I have done " bf's idea " is stuff a thick douvay over the window and it stays in place as I have shutters which close over the window, things are 10 times better now and its more faint noise than anything.

Then you get some 2Fast2Furious wannabe screeching his tyres, engine at 6000rpm, fartbox exhaust system and you wake up with an adrenalin rush thinking "WTF was that??".

Grew up in the country with my parents then moved to a main road terrace in the nearest scum town (priced out of my home area :(). It's a busy main road but not too bad, it's also very near the centre of town.

To be honest, It only bothers me if the windows open. Rest of the time you hardly notice traffic and if you do it's someone buzzing past in an Impreza with no silencers whatsoever.

Thanks for the replies all :)
will give it some time and hopefully be able to get used to it.
If not will be looking at investing in some decent ear plugs! :P

When I moved in, it was the weekend so most of the noise were from cabs taking people back from the night out. I did notice that it was a lot quieter last night :) Fingers crossed that it will be quieter during the week nights. Also unfortunately I like sleeping with the windows open so will have to get used to having them closed at night.

No but my sister does in Sydney and when I stayed there the situation was so ridiculous it was laughable. First of all her window was broken and couldn't be closed properly so it was pretty noisy. Then the pedestrian crossing outside malfunctioned and constantly switched itself on ALL night, with like 30 seconds to a minute in between. I don't know if you have heard the ones in Oz but they're pretty annoying. As if this wasn't bad enough, it also meant that cars and trucks all had to stop at the lights right outside the window.

I also lived in a flat right beside a railway line. Trains every couple of minutes until about 23.30 ish and then starting in the morning at 06.30 - that was no fun.

Now I live beside an engineering company and it seems my neighbours are 3000 seagulls who always come home late at night and make a terrible racket. They are early risers as well.

Should be moving in a couple of weeks to what seems to be a very quiet place but known my luck something will be going on. :)

when I lived with my parent we were right on a main road and my room looked out onto it, was there for so long i dont think i noticed it at all. Now I live with my GF in a really quiet area and it took me ages to get used to it being so quiet.
