£4100 on a 1.6 Civic Executive 2002

All I was implying is that he could have chosen a less bland, more exciting, and less overpriced car for his budget, plenty of stuff out there for that amount of cash!

Are you talking about CI_newman, or the OP? I thought you were having a dig at his wife's choice of car, if you were on about the OP's friend then I apologise, your point is more valid.

Nope, I'm not saying that at all, funny isn't it, how its always the people who aren't the BMW owners that jump to say that, almost as if its funny, even though it just makes you look daft.

Yes, but in here we are all petrol heads.

The car has:

a) An excellent passenger and safety rating
b) Excellent reliability record
c) Is cheap to service
d) Cheap to insure
e) Interior space / passenger space is immense for the size of car

For the size / class of car, he's looking at an Astra or a Focus. I've driven / owned both and they are all bland as far as I'm concerned.

I've already said that he's over paid for it, but as for the car itself it was a perfectly sensible car to buy. I certainly don't see it as a disrespectful car to own.

It's Ronseal! :)

Given that the thread is about the OP's friend's car, that is the car I was talking about ;)

Seriously guys the 'IF HE IS HAPPY ITS A GOOD CAR' thing is rot.

Unless you'd all be patting my back if I went out and bought a tidy Integra Type R on an 03 plate for £30,000?

Sorry, you quoted Chris, which confused me. Your post came across a little 'elitist' that's all, hence the BMW comment.

Can we bin this tiresome practice of assuming that every opinion somebody has is based on the fact they think everyone should drive the same car as they do?

Let's not assume that unless they actually say it, right?

It's a solid sensible car and shouldn't cost much if anything outside of normal running costs. I'm seeing a lot of these still on the roads, in fact I must have seen 4/5 during my 20 minuite drive to work this morning.

While not the most exciting car, not every 21 year old is down with the wicked and obsessed with what awesome car they can barely afford to run. Not every cheap car in Autotrader is a good car. They may have less miles or may just be cheaper but they're privately sold and come with a risk.

If my assumption is correct and this was bought from a Honda dealer, then they will get 12 months warranty on everything but comsumables and probably AA assistance thrown in. Worth the extra? Who knows, depends on what work they might do on the car over the next 12 months. I bought my car with a slightly inflated price, but the car had new tyres when I bought it and new rear brakes. Before my warranty ran out they fitted new shocks and new front brakes for nowt, just about worth the extra cost.

I'm guessing the SE Executive is pretty much top of the range (ignoring the Type-R)?

Yes its boring but they're perfectly good cars, IMO would make a pretty good first car. Parkers says £4150 franchised dealer so if he got a good package (decent warranty etc) then it wasnt a terrible deal I dont think.

"I'm happy with the car so it doesnt matter" is a problem when you've spent 9k on a Clio, when you've bought a Civic that might be a few quid overpriced it isnt.

Edit - main dealer prices seem to be about 5k for these: http://www.honda.co.uk/cars/used/search/details/?stockId=493644

Flippin heck, typical OCUK over reaction here!

The car is fundamentally a good car, as has been summarised very nicely by ci_newman. So what if it's bland, boring and a grandad mobile? Some people prefer simplicity and reliability over form and performance. I expect he doesn't care what he looks like in it, and that it takes him a few seconds longer to get to 60 than some other cars. Why would he if he's not a 'car' person?

Comments such as 'I wouldn't be seen dead in it' when you drive a Fiesta are ridiculous. Why wouldn't you want to be seen in it? Do you REALLY think people care about what car you are sitting in?? Grow up.

To answer the OP, yes he paid a little too much for it, but at the end of the day it's not like he has spent something like 10k over the odds is it?

He could have bought a NEWER, BETTER example for LESS. I may have been somewhat over the top in my comments, as I normally am, but you all know what I'm like :)

In fairness, you havent seen the car in question - it could be absolutely mint with lower than average mileage and a bullet proof 12 month warranty

Could be, then again it could be a total dog. Given the abundance of choice, there's no real need to pay that much over the odds to get a good example.

Ok, he could have. He might also have not been able to find one locally enough, or with the right history, with the right warrantly, etc etc etc.

What would be classed as a 'better' example anyway?

Is it actually over the odds though? Its more than an equivalent Focus but something is only worth what people are willing to pay. I had a quick look at main dealers and found a few 2002 cars up at 5k (see the link I posted)
