horses on the road

While I agree that banning horses from the road is somewhat silly I also think your statement about car drivers is somewhat sweeping, not least as many of those bike riders will drive cars. To imply they are more erudite when riding than driving is naive as it is to suggest that they drive properly because they ride bike. An idiot is an idiot, his mode of transport has little if any influence on that.

Well, what I am trying to say is that if motorists had an experience of cycling on the road, they may become somewhat enlightened to how other motorists are willing to put other peoples lives at risk by overtaking on blind bends, speeding and generally being selfish.

I cycle on the roads all the time. I don't crash into cyclists when driving my car because it would scratch my paintwork. I overtake horses like I would overtake any other slow moving vehicle...

Cyclists can be frustrating though, especially when there isnt room to get around them safely so you must sit behind them at 7mph. Very annoying.

What rubbish!!

Where will the cyclists go? Onto the pavement is the answer, im sure you would appreciate getting hit by a cyclist going 20mph

I think if more drivers actually cycled for a while on the roads they would realise what a bunch of idiots most motorists are.

Ooooh lets see. I don't care.

All I know is that they don't pay to be there, so they have no right to be.

[Edit] To expand, I think nothing towards cyclists at all. Only reason I don't just plough right through is

A) Makes a mess on the car.
B) Makes a mess on the road.
C) It's not a very nice thing to do.

But I see them as I see potholes. Just a hazard to avoid.

I am sorry about the death. But a car could be doing say 50 around a normal road and all of a sudden come across a horse doing 5 mph, at that speed you wouldn't be long flying into the back of it.

Horses should stick to the field

Personally, I despise horses - but more so their riders. Where our shop is located, there are a lot of horse-riding-folk and as such half the roads are covered in their excrement (the horses', not the riders') but that's another story.

The majority of them I will slow down for as they are usually being ridden 'decently' as in, right to the side and single file - even stopping on a verge if needed.
There are some characters though who take to riding 2 or even 3 abreast on the road though, and if you dare to go past as more than 5mph then you get a whip to your car (I've seen the van in front of me get clouted by one woman's whip and spat on, though thankfully nothing to my car as I dread to think what trouble I'd be in as a result of my actions.)

You can guess which type of rider I hate...

As for the tractor argument - where we live is in a similar situation to above, but with tractors and no horses. All the tractor drivers pull over if they are causing a delay and will happily wave you past where possible, and I've never seen one stopped in the middle of the road to open a gate (WTF?!)

Still, RIP to the lass.

You have do be mad to ride a horse on a road at night, what possible reason could you have?

Remember, horses are 5 times more dangerous then motorbikes.

I slow to a crawl and move as far away from horses as possible. I've done running from a stroppy stuck up horse before, TBH I don't want one anywhere near my car.

Why dangerous animals are allowed on the road is beyond me, they could get spooked by something at any moment and go out of control causing many fatalities. Not to mention the traffic problems they and tractors cause, keep them in the farm where they belong. They should only be allowed on the road for short distances for the purpose of crossing between trails. Surely the point in horseriding is going through the countryside not going down the city centre roads?

How could that ever happen unless you were driving dangerously?

Nothing worse than rounding a bend in a truck to be met by a group of Horse riders / cyclists riding two abrest.

Where do they think something as large as an HGV can go in such a situation?

Driving an HGV is all about planning ahead and anticipation but ultimately the HGV is there for a reason, i.e. delivering goods.

Horse riding (with the possible exception of Police duties) is a leisure activity that does not fit well with the life blood of our countrys economy, the road system.

Whilst I am very sorry to hear of his GF's close encounter and I can understand the emotion at this time, I can't agree with the O.P.

I'm not saying cyclists and horses should not be on the roads, just that they should not be complaining when they get involved in their fair share of accidents.

...
Most riders now take an exam to learn about riding horses on the roads ...

My last 3 miles to/from work are through country B-roads and involve going past several riding schools and an equine hospital and I always slow down for horse and rider when I see them. However 'most riders' I see don't even wear any hi-vis jackets or belts.

A few years ago my girlfriend cracked her head open and was knocked unconscious after someone overtook her without slowing down and being way too close to her horse, the horse freaked and threw her off. Dick head in the car didn't stop even though he clearly saw it happen. Luckily someone passed by a little later and helped her, otherwise she probably wouldn't be around today. Think she needed about 20 staples and she still has problems with her back and neck.

On a lighter note someone my girlfriend knows was out riding and a Porsche was sitting very very close to her horse's backside waiting to overtake down a road that leads to a competition ground so you have to expect horses down this road. Anyway the Porsche driver was just sitting there and kept revving his engine in frustration at not being able to overtake. Luckily the horse wasn't spooked by the loud noise but it did get frustrated and just stopped dead with the Porsche about an inch off it's backside. The horse decides to sit down and destroys the front end of said Porsche :D

Whenever I see a horse and rider I'll always slow down and when it is safe to overtake I go completely onto the opposite side of the road. Generally most riders will stop and let you pass if you show them some respect.

These types of riders should not be on the roads I agree.

I know lots of country roads with blind bends around me where there are people of all ages riding horses. So I always slow down and pass wide. But I quite often see boy racers, speeding the lanes so I flash at them hoping it may slow them down.

LOL its SO funny when livestock causes an obstruction and destroys property LOLZ

So if there was a horse in front of you and it wasn't possible to overtake safely you'd sit an inch from the horse's arse revving your engine knowing full well you could spook the horse causing it to rear?

The insurance company sided with the horse rider by the way.

Indeed, but speeding implies that the car was exceeding the posted speed limit. Because thats what all the governments road safety literature is based on.

Ah, sorry, that meaning of speeding.

No, I wouldn't.

If these animals are so easily spooked by traffic why not play with them in fields?

Coming from Newmarket, the area is full of horses and you have to expect horses crossing or traipsing down the various roads. People also tend to be very respectful of the horses, slowing down significantly, helping to keep the horses calm and not speeding off the moment you're half a meter ahead of he horse.

After moving to Berkshire, it's amazing to see that despite being in the countryside, how disrespectful, or rather unthoughtful some people are of horseriders. Going too fast, revving engines, approaching quickly or speeding off quickly... following too closely etc. :(
