Windows 7 on the cheap

Think you may have missed the boat on the good prices. Im seeing prices range from 150-190 for pro full version.

You never know, M$ might sell the upgrade version at a later date now that they got rid of the E version. And theres always the OEM version, although i dont think theres prices for either atm.

Oh bugger, I was out of the country when they had the offer on and unable to buy. Will just keep an eye out in the hope that they run a similar offer again.

Ive seen it on common sites for 65 but dont think i can link because ocuk sell it too.. anyway that might be the oem version and not what you are looking for

you can already get windows 7 on the cheap dl it for free :)

or just look at the OcUK site, but the OP is looking (like me) for the Pro version, which costs almost £100 more.

I saw that link you're referring to before looking here. I'm wondering if they charge for delivery. I'm thinking of buying my components upgrade from overclockers either now or timing it for november and buying windows 7 from overclockers at the same time and saving on delivery costs. Either way, windows 7 is a LOT cheaper than I was expecting. I thought even the most basic version of windows 7 would be like £150.

Also, is windows 7 premium 64 bit going to be all I need or does the pro version offer anything special for the regular home user? I currently run XP Pro but not sure if I've ever made better use of it over XP home. My only real reason for changing OS is because I want to be able to make use of more than 4GB ram should the need arise, and that requires 64 bit from all the google reading I've done today.

Yes it does need 64-bit for more than 4GB ram :)

The pro version is useless if you don't use any of the extra features, it's really that simple, the most important one of those being XP mode which should only be necessary to run older games or business programs, anything else should have been updated a long time ago if it's critical to you.

I'm wondering whether the new OcUK price will stick though? I pre-ordered to grab a nice price but this is even cheaper than the pre-order price i got, 65£ for the home premium edition is close to nothing? If this is the final price i might as well cancel the pre-order for now since i'm just holding it for an upgrade anyway.

Thanks.

"the most important one of those being XP mode which should only be necessary to run older games"

Does that mean with windows 7 premium, there's no XP mode and I won't be able to continue playing older games like quake 3, and gabriel knight 3?

And if I my playing with the Virtual mode in W7 is right, it is poo for games in that environment, so I wouldn't try to play games in Virtual Windows XP on W7.
