My Saab blew a piston on Wednesday, not sure if it was a poor ECU map or some other problem.

It's working value would be about £2000

Replacement engines are £800-1000 + fitting
A rebuild would also probably be expensive.

I'm thinking about just replacing it with another car.

I have £5k + anything I can get from the Saab and I could easily get a loan too if needed.

I like a quiet comfortable car with lots of gadgets. Fuel consumption wise I'm used to getting 25-30mpg so anything better than that would be a bonus.

Performance wise I would like something fairly quick if I can, the Saab had plenty of go with 230bhp.

Insurance can't be too high, below group 18 is possible.

I love the look of the E60 5 series but don't think my budget will stretch.

Accord 2.2TDi is the best I have come up with so far.

Please don't recommend anything French, Italian, Ford, Vauxhall or any other rubbish.

Thanks

Was going to say ST220, this would tick all the above boxes. But I guess that's rubbish compared to the awesomeness of a GM Saab.

The Accord whilst quite a good car and particularly good engine will be a disappointment in the out and out performance stakes, unless you can get them remaped to about 180bhp?

Accord 2.2TDi

Please don't recommend.... any other rubbish.

The Accord may not be a rubbish car, but it hardly fulfils your own criteria of "fairly quick" does it?

I'll recommend an ST220 as it does appear to meet your criteria on all points except for the illogical one about being a Ford.

Vauxhall or any other rubbish.

I do hope you were not under the illusion that your Saab didn't fall into this category.

I recommend a Mondeo ST220. After driving a Saab you'll be amazed at how well it does things other than accelerate in 4th gear, which was pretty much the 9-5's only party piece.

True but it would double my fuel consumption.

I did test drive a 535d a couple of weeks ago, very nice but at £16k it was a little expensive, also at that price it was as shed like inside as you would expect. I think I'd need £20k to get a nice example and that isn't going to happen.

Janesy B - I just dont like Ford and would never buy one, also my dad would dis-own me, being a mechanic he knows all the problems they have.

Fox please leave my thread. Thank you.

No.

I like reasonable sized 200bhpish cars and therefore shall post in threads about them. I also feel I have a lot of useful information to give a potential purchaser of such cars but whether I can be bothered to dispense all of it to somebody so blunt and rude is something I'll decide later.

Infact, I'd be amazed if anyone was willing to waste time giving you advice from your posts in this thread.

You seem very closed minded. All the problems Mondeo's have? Can't think of anything quite as life ending as your Saab..

What a load of tosh - cars like the focus and mondeo are consistently near the top of reliability surveys.

Just the kind of Mondeo bumming I expected from this forum to be honest.

Anyone have any useful suggestions?

Can anyone think of a single reason why we should give up our time to help this chap? You'd think with his attitude problem that he'd paid us for a service or something..

All you needed to do was say 'cool, thanks for the Mondeo idea. Anything else?' and you'd have got... other recommendations. But I doubt this thread will come to anything now as you've been nothing but rude and insulting to everyone who has posted or dared criticise your frankly rather odd OP.

To brand Ford and Vauxhall 'rubbish' when you have a Saab that just exploded is quite perculiar. Especially as your Saab was a Vauxhall, pretty much.

None whatsoever, him spouting nonsense actually angered me a bit. I would suggest everyone reccomends a StreetKa

Funny thing about car mechanics, they always see broken cars :)

Loads of Mondeos, means a higher number of broken ones. Not a higher percentage.

Don't have such a closed mind and actually try one before dismissing it? I hated Fiestas before I got mine, now look a me, I'm all like I $%*&!)£ LOVE FIESTAS!!!!1!one!

I clearly stated I don't want a Ford and people start recommending them, what do you expect me to do?

Your reasoning was totally irrational and based on prejudices from someone who clearly has no idea about cars

Well said - and there's a reason there's a lot of Fiestas, Foci and Mondeos out there.... I wonder what it could be
