Apparently the home office has commissioned a new design in order to reduce the number of injuries caused by people smashing a glass over someone when drunk.

I'm really really against this, drinking beer from a plastic container is just wrong and completely ruins the taste imo. If this comes into play I will be taking my dimple glass to the pub in future.

a few nightclubs already have them, but well, most people in a nightclub arent there for the quality of the beer, real pubs should keep glass, its all part of the experience

If I ever get handed a plastic pint "glass" in a pub, I will smash it over someone's head.

I have NEVER seen anyone smash a glass over anyone or thing. Maybe this just needs to be implemented on the wrong side of each city.

Not to mention its a huge waste of plastic? I assume they will be thrown away once used whereas at least the glass gets washed and used again.

Bars and clubs already can choose, but certain places really do need to wake up and start using them on a permanent basis, or at least on the weekend.

I think city centres everywhere should be forced to use them if they're near drinking areas and on the weekend/at night after e.g. 9pm

Maybe it's the places I go lol but not all places even wash them properly. Though in fairness those same places give the same treatment to glass.

One of my friends and colleages was attacked quite badly while working the door of a pub which was using glass, try telling him that

Any what if it had been a bar stool he was attacked with? make all bar stools out of rubber?

Personally I think there should be a compromise. You must use plastic if you serve alcohol past 8pm, or you are likely to serve football fans on a match day. That way, it at least means you can have a glass during the day.

I would imagine they will be using the soild polycarbonate style plastic glasses which can be washed and reused

The polycarbonate ones do get reused and are very tough.

Well, if they don't use a glass as weapons it'll be bottles. Or a stool. Or pool cue. Or a glock.

They always find a way.

Indeed, but this is about making it more difficult for people to grab the nearest thing to attack someone.

I knew some smart arse would come up with that, its about sensibly minimising risk you can quite easily replace glass with plastic without much of an impact. Making stools out of rubber is just daft.
Also I'd much rather be smacked with a stool than stabbed with a broken glass/bottle

I think it should be up to the establishment. I know why they are thinking about this but it only needs to be implemented in some areas/pubs to have the best effect. I have a glass tankard at my local and they will be swinging in the breeze if they think I'll be drinking out of anything else
