Glass pint glasses to be replaced with plastic

Thinking about it. When football matches got violent etc they didnt try to change anyhting about the experiance they banned the people from the grounds. Dont see why this cant be the case for pubs as well?

Seems like a good idea, I certainly don't trust a lot of people about late with a drink in their hand!

Can't say there's any difference to actual taste, the only thing I think changes is it feels lighter and plastic cups don't feel as cold as a nice pint glass of your favourite beer. As long as the plastic is as recyclable as the glass, I don't have a problem with it.

Real men drink from the bottle.

That and I don't really like the idea of how rarely some bars clean their taps.

Good idea, seen a couple of glassings back in my student days (including a girl). It's not pretty :(

Agree that beer tastes funny out of those cheap, flimsy plastic glasses but not the harder ones, so no disadvantages as long as it's the latter.

banning people from venues? because it isnt going to stop violence with glass is it, once a fight happens it happens! its over and done, and the damage by this time is too far gone.

Thats besides the point, its the actual act of plunging either the knife or glass into someone.

As another point, they knife does not need to be carried. It could be picked up on the premises.

Intent is crucial here, it's the difference between ABH and attempted murder (or manslaughter vs murder). And I don't know many bars that have knives that are accessible.

Why would it be thrown away? The pus/clubs etc can recycling them.

It depends how they make them. If they make them to replicate pint glasses and make them thick then yeah I'm sure they will.

But currently the places I go to use the thin plastic ones used at parties and just chuck em out probably because they would have to get someone to painstakingly wash each individual cup if they were to be recycled...

We (Pilkington) have put prices up 80% since 2008, so you'll probably save a lot on the manufacturing of the pint glasses.

Not to mention the plastic could be highly recyclable if done properly :o

It's a good idea for certain environments but most pubs? No! Pubs are having a hard time as it is without annoying proper ale drinkers etc.

Copied from the other thread on the subject:

Just saw this on the BBC news website and immediately remembered this thread.

I'll be watching this closely. I still have nothing against the change and am very much for it. A good point made about people being used to glass and disliking a change is the fact that we used to drink from pewter flagons and tankards. Things change. T'is the way the world works.

Just as long as they aren't cheap, sharp edged pieces of ****. Unfortunately everything is done at a cost, so they will be cheap, sharp edged and ****... :(

It's a good idea if the plastic cups will be reusable high density plastic. I don't like the idea of pubs being forced to use flimsy cups that are thrown out at the end of the night though. It will increase costs to pub owners and it's far from environmentally friendly. Some people have mentioned that they can be recycled, but that is still a process that requires electricity and produces waste which means it's still a step backwards.

The real problem comes from the people who want to use glasses as weapons though and not the glasses themselves. I've only heard of people getting a glass to the face in really rough bars.
